Softball sweeps doubleheader from Louisiana-Monroe

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas softball team used a combined 4-for-6, three-RBI effort by sophomore catcher Amy Hooks to sweep a doubleheader from Louisiana Monroe, besting the Warhawks, 5-0 and 10-2, Thursday night. The victories improved the Longhorns to 11-4 on the year, while Louisiana Monroe fell to 5-11.
Sophomore righthander Brittany Barnhill (7-1) picked up the victory in the first game, throwing 4.0 innings of shutout softball, allowing two hits, walking one and fanning one. Louisiana Monroe starter Kandace Causey (1-4) was saddled with the loss after tossing 3.0 innings and surrendering five runs (four earned) on five hits.
Texas senior righthander Desiree Williams earned her first career start in game two, throwing 3.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits and striking out two in a no-decision. Junior hurler Torrey Schroeder (4-1) came on in relief of Williams to earn the victory after scattering two hits and allowing one run in 3.0 innings of work.
In game one, Texas jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead when sophomore catcher Amy Hooks hammered a solo home run to left centerfield. The Longhorns added to their lead in the third, pushing four runs across to claim a 5-0 edge. Barnhill led off the frame with a double to center and advanced to third on a sacrifice. An RBI single by freshman shortstop Lexy Bennett scored Barnhill before Williams walked and advanced her to second. Hooks' RBI single to centerfield scored Williams before a two-run double by junior second baseman Loryn Johnson pushed the final two runs across.
Texas claimed an early lead in the nightcap when Williams led off the bottom of the first with a homer. The Warhawks evened the score with a solo shot by Molly McNeill in the second, but Texas answered with five runs in the fourth.
The Horns used a one-out double by junior rightfielder Tallie Thrasher to start the fourth-inning rally . Junior outfielder Brittany Chalk and freshman outfielder Courtney Craig followed with back-to-back singles before a bases-loaded passed ball scored pinch runner Kori Cook.
Freshman pinch hitter Nadia Taylor kept the rally alive with a two-run single and Taylor came home on an RBI single by Bennett. An RBI single by Hooks plated Williams who reached on a single, capping the fourth-inning flurry.
Louisiana Monroe tallied a single run in the fifth, but Texas responded with an RBI single by Chalk that made the score 7-2. The Longhorns tacked on three more runs in the sixth to end the game via run-rule.
An RBI double by junior pinch hitter Megan Paris kicked off the scoring before Johnson followed suit with an RBI double that scored Paris. Chalk concluded the game with an RBI single that plated senior catcher Kacie Gaskin and ended the game, 10-2.
Texas returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 28 when it travels to UTEP for the first two games of a three-game series. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
