Men's Swimming and Diving lands five finals berths on day three of NCAA Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas earned five championships finals berths and fourth consolation finals berths during the day three preliminary session Saturday at the 2009 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships. The Longhorns hold a six-point lead (308-302) over Auburn heading into this evening's finals but will have to withstand a formidable charge from the Tigers this evening, as Auburn earned nine championships finals berths and three consolation finals bids.
Junior Hill Taylor opened the prelims for Texas by qualifying eighth for tonight's 200 backstroke final in 1:40.47, good for the third-fastest swim in UT history. Freshman Neil Caskey qualified 15th in 1:41.46 and will compete in tonight's consolation final. Sophomore Bryan Collins will join Caskey in the consolation final after taking 16th in 1:41.83. Senior Sean Patton just missed the consolation final after taking 17th in 1:41.90. Freshman Hayes Johnson took 20th in 1:42.18, and junior Alan Maher placed 23rd in 1:42.60.
Texas qualified two for tonight's 100 freestyle finals. Freshman Jimmy Feigen, who seized UT's 50 freestyle record on Thursday, broke teammate Dave Walters' school mark by qualifying third in 41.77. Walters qualified sixth at 42.05, and junior Peter Jameson will compete in the consolation final after taking 11th at 42.63. Sophomore Scott Jostes took 24th at 43.12, and junior Ben Van Roekel placed 26th at 43.24.
Senior Agustin Magruder took 12th in the 200 breaststroke at 1:54.85 and will compete in the consolation final. Freshman Eric Friedland took 23rd at 1:56.76. Junior Ricky Berens took 24th in the 200 butterfly at 1:44.58, and sophomore Brian Wilson qualified 32nd at 1:45.41.
Texas ended the swimming preliminary session by qualifying fifth in the 400 freestyle relay at 2:50.37. Jostes led off in 43.08 before Jameson split 42.28 on the second leg. Van Roekel picked up the third leg in 42.61 before Walters anchored in 42.40.
Freshman diver Drew Livingston qualified second for tonight's platform finals with 453.25 points. Livingston set a new NCAA meet record on his way to victory Friday in the one-meter competition.
