Southern Mississippi
Head coach Corky Miller
Opening statement: We had an opportunity to win. We kept coming back; we just didn't throw strikes at the end of the game... Our players played like I thought they would on a big stage. I thought there were no nerves, we just didn't throw strikes at the end, and we just didn't throw strikes all game. That's really why we lost the game. We had every opportunity to win, and we just didn't get it done.
On falling to the loser's bracket: For whatever reason, we just didn't throw strikes, all through the staff from beginning to end, and they did. [We walked nine, Texas walked four] - there's your ballgame right there.
On the long road ahead: There's no tomorrow ... We've got to win Tuesday, and we'll go from there. We won't think about that third game until we win the next one. We'll take it one game at a time.
Senior 2B James Ewing
On battling back with confidence: We've faced adversity before. We've battled back from being down. What's happened to us is that we've found a way to close out. This game was sloppy on both sides. It is just the way it goes; we didn't play well enough to win.
Texas
Head coach Augie Garrido
Opening statement: I want to start with the performance of the Golden Eagles. The ending is not befitting of the performance. Baseball is a cruel game ... being in this position for the first time was the demise of an otherwise very good team.
On Texas responding to giving up the lead: We responded well, we were able to overcome the adversities baseball throws at us. We are grateful to win, it puts us in the winners bracket, which is the most important thing.
On the game: Championships are decided by the unexpected and we were the beneficiaries of some nervousness tonight. Total offense means doing what the ball tells you to do. But you have to be disciplined enough to do that.
On what he said Loy in the ninth: That he was going to take until he got two strikes. But I told him not to ignore the pitches, I told him to watch every pitch to get his timing and rhythm because he was only going to get one pitch to swing at.
Freshman SS Brandon Loy
On coming back in bottom of 8th and how fortunate to move on: Getting the bases loaded put pressure on USM to throw strikes. It helped us out and put the pressure on them.
Sophomore P Cole Green
On how excited he is to win first CWS game and the key to the win: I'm happy about the win and to have started. You have to give credit to Southern Miss. on capitalizing. My pitches felt good. My slider felt good and I threw the change when I needed it.
Junior DH Russell Moldenhauer
On batting clean-up this game: I believe I hit the ball well all year although my batting average doesn't show it. Coach believes in me. I was glad to hit the homerun and am looking forward to the next game.
