TANAGURA, Japan -- Texas senior Charlie Holland fired a four-under 68 to secure a top-10 individual finish and help the 23rd-ranked Longhorns to a fourth-place team finish Thursday in the final round of The Topy Cup, a 10-team, 60-player event at the par 72, 7,127-yard Tanagura Country Club.
UT registered a one-over 289 on the day and took fourth place overall with its six-over 870 for the tournament. No. 2 Washington captured the team title at eight-under par, while Tohoku Fukushi University took second at four-under par. Colorado State placed third at even par, and the fourth American school in the field, Michigan State, took seventh place at 40-over par. Tohoku Fukushi's Yoshinori Fujimoto took medalist honors at nine-under par.
After starting the day tied for 14th place, Holland (Dallas, Texas) saved his best for last and vaulted himself into a tie for eighth place with his four-under 68, good for UT's lowest round of the tournament. Holland made the turn with a 34 after sinking birdies at the third, fourth, seventh and ninth holes. Holland added birdies at the 13th, 14th and 18th holes, as he finished with a one-under 215 for the tournament.
Junior Chris Causey just missed a top-10 individual finish in his first career varsity start. Causey (The Woodlands, Texas) carded a two-over 74 in the final round behind birdies at the eighth, ninth, 11th, 14th and 18th holes. Causey placed 11th overall with a one-over 216.
Senior Lance Lopez fired a two-over 74 behind birdies at the 10th and 11th holes. Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) tied for 20th place with a five-over 221. Sophomore Alex Moon enjoyed his low round of the tournament on Thursday with a one-over 73 behind birdies at the fourth, ninth and 14th holes. Moon (Plano, Texas) tied for 24th place at six-over par.
Sophomore Dylan Frittelli, who has played in every tournament for the Longhorns since his arrival last fall, shot a three-over 75 and sank birdies at the 10th and 14th holes. Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) tied for 27th place at eight-over par.
Texas will begin competition at the Olympia Fields Invitational in Olympia Fields, Ill., on Friday, Sept. 18.
POST-ROUND QUOTES
Texas head coach John Fields
"Finishing fourth in our first event of the fall is a precursor for the rest of the season. Charlie Holland came back today with an outstanding 68. His play gave us a chance to finish in the top-five. Chris Causey had a solid event and narrowly missed the top-10 in his first varsity event as a Longhorn. I am proud of his spirit and devotion to our team. He will challenge our players to continue to get better, which is exactly what a very good team needs. Over the course of the fall season, our tournament rosters will change, based upon our home qualifying. Those that step up will lead this team to a very good year."
