TRINITY, Texas -- Texas junior Bobby Hudson fired an eight-under 64 in the first of two rounds Friday at the 2010 Big 12 Championships to tie the event's single-round record at the par 72, 7,470-yard Whispering Pines Golf Club.
Hudson's effort highlighted a productive day one for the Longhorns at the Big 12 Championship, as UT shot a 6-under 282 in the morning round and a 4-under 284 in the afternoon round. Texas ended day one in third place at 10-under for the tournament, just one shot behind 36-hole leaders Texas A&M and Oklahoma State. Texas Tech sits in fourth at 5-under par, and Kansas State holds the fifth slot at 3-under par.
Coupled with his 1-under 71 in round two, Hudson sits in second through 36 holes at 9-under par. Texas Tech's Chris Ward sits atop the leaderboard at 10-under par. Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) opened his first round with a birdie at the first hole and followed with three pars. Hudson added another birdie at No. 5, a par-five at 579 yards, and at No. 6, a par-four. With three additional pars, Hudson made the turn with a 33 and promptly birdied No. 10, a par-four.
Hudson's only error of the round came at No. 11, where he carded a bogey, but he went on to sink birdies at five of the next six holes, including consecutive birdies at Nos. 14 through 17. He added one more par at No. 18 to finish his collegiate-best 8-under 64. It tied the Big 12 Championships' 18-hole record of 64 set by Oklahoma's John Kidwell in 2002. Hudson added five birdies in round two on his way a 1-under 71.
Freshman Cody Gribble ended his first day of postseason competition in a tie for seventh place at 3-under par. Gribble (Dallas, Texas) carded a 1-over 73 in round one before firing a 4-under 68 in round two. Gribble closed his second round with consecutive birdies at the seventh, eighth and ninth holes.
Senior Charlie Holland ended day one in a tie for 21st place. Holland (Dallas, Texas) sank four birdies in round one on his way to an even-par 72 before finishing with a one-over 73 in round two. Sophomore Dylan Frittelli joined Holland in a tie for 21st place. With three birdies in each round, Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) carded a 1-over 73 in round one and an even-par 72 in the second round.
Senior Lance Lopez ended the opening day in a tie for 32nd place at 4-over par. Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) carded a 3-over 75 in the opening round and followed with a 1-over 73 in round two.
Texas begins round three at the 2010 Big 12 Championship on Saturday at 9:50 a.m. Central at Whispering Pines.
POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas head coach John Fields
On Bobby Hudson's opening round: Everyone came out firing in his group, and Bobby Hudson just kind of hung in there. He was solid coming in the front side and made a couple of more birdies and got himself in position for a good round. He birdied No. 10 right off the bat and then hit what we thought was almost a really fine shot on the 11th hole, but he got in a tough position and ended up making bogey. But from that moment, he came back with birdie on the par five at 12, and birdied 14 through 17 to shoot a 64. It was fantastic golf, one of the better rounds that's ever been shot at the Big 12 Championship. He followed that with 71. He was patient all day long and he birdied three of his last five holes in the second round. He had one momentary lapse in concentration, but other than that, it was fantastic golf.
On ending the day one shot off of the lead: Bobby Hudson did a great job of getting us going. I know our guys can play good golf. We have a chance to continue to have a good golf tournament. We need to come back tomorrow and be prepared to play. We have to come with it every time we play on this course - every hole, every shot. Whispering Pines is a great golf course, and it's fun to play, but we just need to keep charging.
