WACO, Texas -- The University of Texas Soccer team played to a 0-0 double overtime tie against Baylor Sunday night in Waco. It is the first tie of the season for UT moving its season record to 4-5-1 while the Bears move to 4-2-3.
The tie was the Longhorns first of the season and the first since Oct. 31, 2008 when Baylor visited Austin resulting in a 0-0 double overtime tie as well.
Neither team was able to put together many scoring opportunities in the first half with each squad tallying three shots. Texas held the advantage on shots on goal with one coming from freshman Kristin Cummins. Higgins had the Horns closest shot of the half when her kick from 35 yards out rebounded off the cross bar.
In the second half, UT had a great look from sophomore Amanda Lisberger in the 75th minute when she fired from the right side of the field about 25 yards out. Her shot was then punched over the cross bar by BU Keeper Gianna Quintanna.
Baylor had a close call of its own just seven minutes later when Betsy Kyle received the ball on the left corner of the six-yard box but chipped it over the net keeping the game knotted at 0-0.
A total of three shots were fired over the two overtime periods with neither team being able to connect. The Longhorns recorded their third shutout of the year with the tie and ended the first weekend of conference play with four points.
The Longhorns return to Austin next weekend for matches against Missouri (Friday, Oct. 2) and Kansas (Sunday, Oct. 4).
POST MATCH QUOTES
Head Coach Chris Petrucelli
On getting four points in the first weekend of conference play: We got four points on the road in conference on the weekend so we have to look at that as a positive, although I'm a little disappointed we didn't win tonight.
On the play of the backline and recording third shutout: I thought overall our whole backline was really good tonight. We were really solid back there all weekend and only gave up one goal and recording a shutout was a good step for us.
On playing 110 minutes: We were definitely weary. At half time I didn't think we had much left in us but we fought through it for the tie.
