AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas sophomore midfielder Kristin Cummins became the 10th Longhorn to record a hat trick in program history and junior Lucy Keith netted the gamewinner in the 98th minute as Texas defeated UW-Milwaukee, 4-3, in an overtime thriller Friday night out at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Cummins became the first Longhorn to record a hat trick since Kelsey Carpenter in 2006. Texas moves to 7-2-2 on the season while Milwaukee is now 6-4-2.
Milwaukee got on the board first in the 12th minute of the match with a goal from Sarah Hagan. A Panther sent the ball into the box that sophomore goalkeeper Alexa Gaul came out to save but the ball rolled off her hands on the dive and Hagan was there to collect, shooting it into an open net.
Texas wasted no time responding, scoring just one minute later in the 13th when Cummins headed in a long cross from senior Kirsten Birkhold. The rest of the first half was mainly played in the middle third of the field and was still tied heading into the second half.
Cummins struck again to put the Horns in the lead in the 64th minute. Redshirt freshman Leah Fortune assisted on the play when she received a cross in the middle of the box that she one-touched back out to Cummins who was wide open at the top of the box. Cummins fired in a low hard shot to the left corner of the net to put the Horns up 2-1.
Milwaukee countered in the 75th off of a goal from Demi Price but Texas once again responded quickly, taking the lead in the 77th off of another header from Cummins. Senior defender Erica Campanelli sent in a long high cross from the far left sideline and the sophomore midfielder was able to get her head on it to give Texas a 3-2 advantage.
With the match winding down, the Panthers continued to pressure and evened the score in the 85th when Hagan scored her second goal of the match. Keara Thompson's initial shot bounced off the near post and the Hagan was able to get her foot on it for the equalizer to send the game to overtime.
In the first overtime period, Milwaukee was on the attack early but it was Texas who scored first after earning a corner kick in the 98th minute. Junior Kylie Doniak's kick went right to the middle of the box where junior Keith volleyed it in over Milwaukee keeper Jamie Forbes.
With the win, Texas picked up its first overtime victory of the season. Cummins, who entered the match with just two goals on the season, now has a team-leading total of five. She is also the first Longhorn to score more than once in a match this year. In addition, Keith racked up her second gamewinner in as many goals this season.
The Longhorns return to Big 12 action this Sunday, Oct. 3 with a match at Kansas starting at 1 p.m. Central.
