RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- Led by a 7-under 65 from freshman Cody Gribble, No. 10 Texas shot its finest round in two seasons and counted four sub-70 scores Monday afternoon, as the Longhorns opened up an eight-shot lead with one round remaining at the Puerto Rico Classic.
UT fired a 19-under 269 in Monday's second round, good for the Horns' lowest round since Nov. 7, 2007, when Texas shot a 269 in the final round of the Turtle Bay Invitational. Coupled with an 11-under 277 from Sunday's opening round, Texas sits atop the leaderboard at 30-under par and leads second-place Oklahoma State, the nation's top-ranked team, by eight strokes. Clemson sits in third at 17-under par, and Georgia is in fourth at 12-under par. Georgia Tech rounds out the top-five at 11-under.
Gribble (Dallas, Texas), who sat two shots off of the lead after the opening round, assumed the individual lead through 36 holes with his 7-under 65, which matches the season-low round of 65 he carded at the UTSA Lone Star Invitational in October.
Gribble, who boasts three top-three finishes in five previous starts this season, sits at 12-under through two rounds and holds a one shot lead over Georgia's Harris English and Oklahoma State's Kevin Tway. Georgia Tech's J.T. Griffin is in fourth at 9-under par.
UT junior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) carded a 5-under 67 and finds himself in a tie for fifth place at 7-under for the tournament. Sophomore Dylan Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) notched his second 3-under 69 in as many days and joins Gribble and Hudson in the top-10, as he is tied for seventh place at 6-under par.
Senior Lance Lopez (Missouri City, Texas) notched a season-low round with a 4-under 68. At 5-under for the tournament, Lopez is tied for 11th place with 18 holes remaining. Senior Charlie Holland (Dallas, Texas) carded a 2-over 74 and is tied for 36th place at 1-over for the event.
Texas tees off in Tuesday's final round at 7:30 a.m. local time (5:30 a.m. Central)
POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas head coach John Fields
"I'm very pleased with our play today. It was an exceptional round led by Cody Gribble. Cody's 65 was outstanding, and that puts him in the final group tomorrow. We had four rounds in the 60's today, and to finish 19-under for the round says a lot about our players. I am proud of this round, and I give our guys tremendous credit. They had a great day."
