LAS VEGAS -- Paced by top-five individual finishes from freshman Cody Gribble and sophomore Dylan Frittelli, No. 4 Texas finished in seventh place Sunday at the 15-team Southern Highland Collegiate Masters at the Southern Highlands Golf Club.
All five Longhorns returned Sunday to post scores considerably lower than their second rounds. Texas shaved 18 strokes off of its second round and finished with a 14-over 302 in the final round, as UT went on to place seventh at 55-over par for the tournament. UNLV and UCLA tied for the tournament title at 35-over par. Arizona State's Jesper Kennegard claimed individual medalist honors at 3-over par.
Gribble scattered four birdies en route to his 2-over 74 in the final round to finish in a tie for fifth place at 6-over par for the tournament. It marks Gribble's fifth top-five individual finish in seven starts this season. Frittelli notched his fourth top-five finish of the season, as he carded a team-best 1-over 73 in the final round and joined Gribble in a tie for fifth overall at 6-over par. The Texas tandem finished three shots behind the tournament medalist, ASU's Kennegard.
Junior Bobby Hudson sank one birdie in round three and finished with a 7-over 79. Hudson tied for 43rd place at 20-over par. Senior Charlie Holland shaved five strokes off of his opening round and carded a 6-over 78 in Sunday's final round. Holland tied for 64th place at 25-over par.
Senior Lance Lopez shaved nine shots off of his second round and carded a 5-over 77 in round three behind three birdies. Lopez tied for 70th place at 28-over par. Freshman Johnathan Schnitzer, playing as an individual, shot an 86 in round three and finished in 79th place at 42-over par.
Texas resumes play on Wednesday at the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz.
POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas head coach John Fields
"Coming to Las Vegas on the heels of winning in Puerto Rico was a positive. The last few years we have struggled with the Southern Highlands course. This year was a mixed bag in that Dylan Frittelli and Cody Gribble played well and tied for fifth, but Bobby Hudson, Lance Lopez and Charlie Holland struggled. The tournament field was loaded, so the consolation is that we got past some great teams. We have plenty of motivation going into our next event this week in Arizona."
