FULLERTON, Calif. -- The No. 15 Texas Softball team tied a school record with 20 hits as it rallied to defeat San Jose State, 13-8, Thursday evening at the Judi Garman Classic. The victory improved the Longhorns to 22-4 on the year, while the Spartans dropped to 20-6.
Senior righthander Erin Tresselt (5-0) earned the victory for the Horns after firing 3.0 innings of relief and allowing three runs (none earned) on three hits. Freshman Blaire Luna tossed the final two scoreless frames and struck out four. San Jose State reliever Jaclyn Imhof suffered the loss for the Spartans after throwing 0.2 innings in relief and allowing four runs on eight hits.
The Spartans got on the board first, pushing one run across in the first frame to take a 1-0 edge. Rightfielder Kelli Fangonillo sparked the rally with a two-out double before an RBI single by designated player Ursula Lopez brought her home to score the game's first tally.
Texas responded in the second, using four hits and a sacrifice fly to claim a 3-1 lead. Freshman rightfielder Taylor Hoagland led off the frame with a bunt single and moved into scoring position on a double by junior designated player Shelby Savony. A squeeze bunt single by junior second baseman Raygan Feight plated Hoagland and a sacrifice fly by senior centerfielder Brittany Chalk scored Savony. Feight came around to score on an RBI double by sophomore first baseman Lexy Bennett, pushing the lead to two.
San Jose State closed the margin to 3-2 in the second on an RBI single by leftfielder Alyssa Sulay and widened the lead to 8-3 in the third. The Spartans took advantage of six hits and four Texas errors in the inning, sending 11 batters to the plate to take control of the game.
Texas scored one run in the fourth on Bennett's second RBI double of the day before mounting a serious rally in the fifth to narrow the tally to 8-7. Junior catcher Amy Hooks led off the frame with a single to leftfield and moved to third on a double to left centerfield by sophomore third baseman Nadia Taylor. An RBI single by Hoagland plated Hooks and a SJSU error allowed Taylor to score. Hoagland raced home on Feight's RBI fielder's choice to cap the scoring and move UT within one run.
The Horns forged ahead in the sixth, pushing five runs across and registering seven hits. Hooks drew a leadoff walk to start the frame. Taylor followed with a single and a sacrifice moved both runners into scoring position before an illegal pitch allowed pinch runner Torie Schmidt to come home. Savony followed the illegal pitch with her eighth home run of the season to give the Horns a 10-7 lead. Senior pinch hitter Tallie Thrasher added a double after the homer and senior leftfielder Kori Cook reached on a single before back-to-back RBI singles by Bennett and senior shortstop Loryn Johnson ballooned the lead to 12-8.
Texas added a final tally in the seventh, using a single by Taylor to start the inning and a sacrifice fly by Feight to move the score to 13-8.
Bennett, Taylor and Hoagland paced the Texas offense on the night with three hits each, while Taylor scored three runs. Savony, Feight and Bennett each registered three RBI in the victory. Hoagland's bunt single in the second extended her team-best hitting streak to 13 games.
