TUCSON, Ariz. -- Texas sophomore Dylan Frittelli registered his second career collegiate victory Thursday, as he fired a 2-under 70 in the final round and secured a three-stroke win at the 83-player National Invitational Tournament at the par 72, 7,200-yard Omni Tucson National Golf Club.
Frittelli, who trailed TCU's Johan de Beer and Baylor's Joakim Mikkelsen by one shot heading into the final round, finished at 6-under par for the 54-hole event, as he outdistanced Colorado State's Bryce Hanstad and Baylor's Mikkelsen. It marks the second victory for a Longhorn this season and the first for Frittelli since February 2009, when he captured the Puerto Rico Classic.
As a team, Texas saved its finest round of the tournament for Thursday, as UT carded a 5-under 283 and finished the event in second place at 2-under par. TCU took the team title at 12-under par, and SMU placed third at 1-over par.
Junior Bobby Hudson fired a 1-under 71 in Thursday's final round and landed his second top-five finish of the season. Hudson finished in fourth at 2-under par. Senior Lance Lopez matched Frittelli's 2-under 70 in the final round and tied for 12th place at even-par.
Freshman Cody Gribble shot an even-par 72 in the final round and tied for 40th place at 7-over par. Senior Charlie Holland carded a 2-over 74 on Thursday and tied for 48th place at 9-over par.
Texas resumes play on Monday, April 5 when it hosts the annual Morris Williams Intercollegiate at The University of Texas Golf Club.
POST-ROUND COMMENTS
Texas head coach John Fields
"This was a challenging two-tournament set (Southern Highlands and National Invitational Tournament) for our team. The courses in Las Vegas and Tucson were distinctly different. Our second-place finish was solid today on the heels of a 5-under final round. I am really happy for Dylan Frittelli to get his second career individual win. Bobby Hudson followed with another top-five finish. As a team, our equation is simple: we need to have all five guys playing well at the same time."
