No. 4 Men’s Golf ties for third at The Desimone Invitational

Daniel Bennett ties for seventh in the individual standings at 8-under overall.
DALY CITY, Calif. — The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 6-under 282 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for third place at The Desimone Invitational at Lake Merced Golf Club. Sophomore Daniel Bennett posted a 3-under 69 in his final round to place in a tie for seventh in the individual standings at 8-under 208 (70-69-69).
Texas, which entered Tuesday's round in a tie for ninth in the team standings, counted scores from senior Christiaan Maas (5-under 67), Bennett (3-under 69), senior Luke Potter (1-over 73) and senior Tommy Morrison (1-over 73) for a team score of 6-under 282 to climb six spots on the tournament's final day.
No. 9 Arizona State claimed the team title with a 54-hole score of 39-under 825 (271-276-278), while TCU was runner-up at 19-under 845 (273-281-291). Texas (286-278-282), tourney host California (281-281-284) and SMU (276-280-290) finished in a three-way tie for third at 18-under 846. The 15-team field featured five squads in the top 25 of the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (March 6).
SMU's Ben Steinmann (67-65-71) and Pongsapak Laopakdee of Arizona State (64-67-72) shared individual medalist honors at 13-under 203. Sam Renner of Washington State (73-65-68) and Pepperdine's Willy Walsh (67-72-67) tied for third at 10-under 206.
Texas returns to the course when it competes at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational on March 23-24 (Monday-Tuesday) in Palm City, Fla.
The Lineup
- Sophomore Daniel Bennett, who finished his fourth and final round at the PGA TOUR's Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando on Sunday and flew out that night to San Francisco to join his teammates, carded a 3-under 69 on Tuesday to tie for seventh in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 8-under 208 (70-69-69). This marked Bennett's fourth top-eight individual finish in his first seven events this season. Starting on hole 10, he recorded five birdies (holes 13, 14, 18, 3 and 9) during his final round.
- Senior Christiaan Maas fired a 5-under 67 in his final round to finish 12th in the individual standings with a three-round score of 6-under 210 (73-70-67). He has now placed in the top-12 in six of his first eight events this season. Maas tallied a total of eight birdies (holes 11, 13, 15, 18, 3, 5, 8 and 9) on Tuesday.
- Competing as an individual, graduate Matt Comegys posted a 3-over 75 on Tuesday to tie for 13th with a 54-hole total of 5-under 211 (66-70-75). He registered a pair of birdies (holes 10 and 18) during his final round.
- Senior Luke Potter recorded a 1-over 73 in his final round to tie for 38th with a three-round score of 1-over 217 (72-72-73). Potter tallied three birdies (holes 10, 11 and 14) on Tuesday.
- Senior Tommy Morrison registered a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to tie for 38th with a 54-hole total of 1-over 217 (71-73-73).
- Sophomore Eduardo Derbez Torres carded a 6-over 78 in his final round to tie for 44th with a three-round score of 2-over 218 (73-67-78).
