AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Soccer team used goals from freshman Gabby Zarnegar and junior Lucy Keith to post a 2-1 win over Louisiana State in an exhibition match, Saturday night out at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Zarnegar got the Longhorns on the board right away as she connected on her first career goal just five minutes into the match. The freshman started the attack with a through ball to the lower left corner of the box that junior Kylie Doniak chased down. Doniak sent a low cross into the center of the box back to Zarnegar that she knocked in from about five yards out.
LSU evened the score in the 71st minute off a goal from Addie Eggleston but Texas responded scoring just a minute and a half later when senior Alisha Ortiz slipped a ball out to junior Lucy Keith on the left side of the box. Keith took it in a few feet before firing it to the lower right corner of the net past LSU keeper Mo Isom.
Texas outshot the Tigers 10 -6, including a 7-2 advantage in the first half. Midfielders Kristin Cummins and freshman Lexi Harris led the Horns with two shots a piece while a total of eight Longhorns had at least one shot attempt. Texas played a young starting lineup which included three true freshman, four sophomores, two juniors and two seniors.
The Longhorns open the 2010 season officially on Friday, Aug. 20 when they head to N.C. State for a match at 6 p.m. Central.
