RALEIGH, N.C. -- The University of Texas soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to pick up its first win of the 2010 season at N.C. State, Friday night. Freshman Gabby Zarnegar and redshirt freshman Leah Fortune each recorded a goal to lift the Horns past the Wolf Pack.
After both teams played to a scoreless tie after the first 45 minutes, Texas came out firing in the second period and put up the match's first goal in the 50th minute. Redshirt freshman Leah Fortune got the play started when she sent her signature flip throw-in to the center of the box. Junior Kylie Doniak got her foot on it and one-touched it over to sophomore Hannah Higgins. Higgins then fired it over to Zarnegar who sent the ball to the far left corner of the goal.
N.C. State evened the score in the 60th minute when Kristina Argiroff sent a long shot in that bounced of UT keeper Alexa Gaul. N.C. State's Jennie Krauser was there to collect the rebound and sent it in past a diving Gaul.
Texas responded 17 minutes later off of a goal from Fortune. Senior Alisha Ortiz sent a through ball past a Wolf Pack defender to Fortune who played it to the lower right corner of the net for the gamewinner.
Keeper Alexa Gaul made four saves in the match as N.C. State outshot Texas 11-5. Zarnegar and Fortune pick up their first goals of the season and Texas is now 2-1 in road openers under head coach Chris Petrucelli.
The Longhorns return to Austin next weekend for matches against UTSA (Friday, 7 p.m. Central) and USC (Sunday, 1 p.m. CT) out at Myers Stadium.
POST MATCH QUOTES
Head Coach Chris Petrucelli
On the game overall: It's a good win. Anytime you can win on the road you have ot be excited. We played a team that was very motivated and played really hard which made it difficult for us. Felt like we sustained the momentum throughout the game, got ahead, lost the lead and then ended up getting the gamewinner. So it's a good result for us.
On the importance of opening the season with a win: It's huge. It's a huge huge win for us. Very important for us to get a win to start and it gives you some confidence, makes you feel like all the work you've put in for the last three weeks has really helped.
On the play of Leah Fortune: Leah was gone all year and we hadn't seen her much, we actually just got her back this week and we're happy to have her back. She created the first goal with her throw-in and then got the game winner and was just dangerous the whole game.
