AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas soccer team used three goals from three different players to pick up a 3-1 victory over UTSA Friday night out at Myers Stadium. The Longhorns are now 2-0-0 on the season while UTSA recorded its first loss of the year and is now 2-1-0.
Texas controlled possession for the majority of the game right from the first whistle, putting up five shots over the first 10 minutes and 16 total in the half. Fortune was the first Longhorn to connect on one of their shots, when she headed in a free kick from Kylie Doniak in the 16th minute. It was the redshirt freshman's second goal of the year after she recorded the gamewinner at N.C. State a week ago.
Senior Kirsten Birkhold notched Texas' second goal and her first of the season after she sent in a long shot from just about 30 yards out that slipped through UTSA keeper Dacia Webb's hands into the lower left corner of the net in the 25th minute.
UTSA evened the score in the 57th minute when Maria Jose Rojas was able to get through the Texas backline and had a one-on-one with UT keeper Alexa Gaul. Rojas fired her shot past Gaul to the upper right corner of the net for the Roadrunner's lone score of the match.
Texas kept up its offensive pressure, scoring once again in the 72nd minute. Fortune brought the ball up and sent a low pass over to sophomore Hannah Higgins who sailed in a long shot from 18 yards out on the left side past UTSA keeper Danielle Synder's hands into the upper right corner of the net.
Texas outshot the Roadrunners 26-2 and forced the UTSA keepers to record 11 saves. UT's 26 shots are its most in a match since 2007 (37 vs. Houston, Sept. 21) and its three goals scored were its most since 2008 (four vs. Oklahoma, Oct. 17).
The Longhorns wrap up their two-game home stand when they host USC at 1 p.m. on Sunday out at Myers Field.
