AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Longhorns team fell to the visiting Texas A&M Aggies, 3-0, in State Farm Lone Star Showdown action on a chilly Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
A&M's first goal came in the 39th minute off a long strike from senior midfielder Bri Young, who teed up her shot from well outside the box. The ball sailed over the outstretched hand of Texas goalkeeper Alexa Gaul and hit the inside of the far post. The goal was Young's first of the year.
The Aggies second goal came in the 50th minute when freshman forward Kelley Monogue got behind the Texas defense, dribbled around Gaul, and passed the ball into the open net.
A&M sealed the match in the 74th minute with another long-range strike. This time the goal came from senior forward Merritt Mathias. Mathias took the ball down the right sideline and sent a sailing shot all the way into the far side netting to give the Aggies a 3-0 lead.
Texas' best scoring opportunity came in the second half when Kylie Doniak launched a shot that hit the cross with the Longhorns trailing 2-0.
The Longhorns return to action next week at the Big 12 Championship Tournament in San Antonio, Texas. First round matches begin on Wednesday.
