AUSTIN, Texas- Texas (6-4, 3-4 Big 12) outgained No. 16/17 Kansas State (9-2, 6-2 Big 12) by nearly 200 yards, but the Wildcats held on for a 17-13 victory over the Longhorns Saturday evening before 100,705 at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
Texas and Kansas State traded scoreless opening possessions in the first quarter before the Wildcats' Emmanuel Lamur intercepted UT quarterback David Ash off of a tipped pass and returned the ball 15 yards to the Texas 16. K-State picked up one first down before settling for a 20-yard field goal from Anthony Cantele with 7:10 left in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, Texas downed a Justin Tucker punt at the Wildcats' one-yard line, and a three-and-out resulted in a short field for the Horns on their next possession. Tucker booted a 48-yard field goal on the ensuing possession to knot the score at three with 10:12 left in the first half.
K-State found the end zone just before halftime, as quarterback Collin Klein threw to Chris Harper for a 16-yard touchdown to give the Wildcats a 10-3 lead with nine seconds remaining in the half.
K-State's Ty Zimmerman intercepted the ball on the Horns' first drive of the third quarter and returned the ball to the Texas 37. Seven plays later, K-State's Klein plunged into the end zone from three yards out to give the Wildcats a 17-3 lead with 6:59 left in the third quarter.
Texas, however, closed the gap on its next possession. Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin took a reverse for 27 yards down the left sideline to the K-State 409, and four plays later, quarterback Case McCoy found tight end Blaine Irby for a 36-yard touchdown to cut the K-State lead to 17-10 with 3:43 left in the third quarter.
Texas drove deep into K-State territory midway through the fourth quarter, as running back Cody Johnson ripped off a 55-yard run that took the Horns to the K-State 23. After an eight-yard run from running back Joe Bergeron set up first and 10 from the K-State 11, the Wildcats held and Tucker kicked a 26-yard field goal to cut the lead to 17-13 with 4:27 left in the game.
Texas got the ball back twice more, and although the Horns had the ball at midfield in the final minute, Texas could advance no further.
