SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Texas Longhorns lost their Big 12 Championship semifinal contest to the No. 2 Oklahoma State Cowgirls, 1-0, in double overtime on Friday evening at Blossom Soccer Stadium.
The Longhorns, who played the Cowgirls to a 1-1 tie in Stillwater in October, played on an even keep with Oklahoma State through the first 90 minutes. Oklahoma State owned a 9-8 edge in shots through regulation, but Texas owned a 4-2 edge in corner kick opportunities.
The Cowgirls peppered the goal with five shots, while the Longhorns were unable to register a shot, in the first overtime period, but the Longhorns weathered the storm to push the game to the second overtime.
Texas came out strong early in the second overtime, outshooting the Cowgirls 3-1, but Oklahoma State's second shot proved to be the game-ender with 2:07 remaining until the game would have gone to a penalty kick shootout.
Miriam Rhinehart gathered the ball by the right corner flag and bounced a cross into the penalty box. Kristen Kelley got the ball 12 yards out and booted past Longhorns' netminder Alexa Gaul for the golden goal.
Gaul made five saves in goal for the Longhorns and Whitney Jaynes added a defensive save on the backline.
With the loss, Texas fell to 11-8-1 on the season. Oklahoma State improved to 19-0-2 and advanced to the Big 12 Championship final on Sunday afternoon. The Longhorns will await the NCAA Tournament selection show on Monday.
