Baseball downs Maryland 8-0 in season opener

AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Longhorns opened up their 2011 baseball campaign with an 8-0 victory over the Maryland Terrapins at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday afternoon.
Taylor Jungmann was solid in a complete-game shutout and the Texas offense came to life in the sixth inning for a strong opening to the new season.
Jungmann struck out nine, walked one and allowed five hits, only one of which came after the third inning. It marked his first career complete-game shutout, and he improved to 11-0 in 18 career starts at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns opened scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Jonathan Walsh hit a standup double to right-center field off Terrapins starter Sander Beck to start the frame. Two batters later, Walsh crossed home plate on an Erich Weiss RBI triple for the first run of the game.
Texas broke the game open with a four-run bottom of the sixth. After Beck walked Mark Payton with one out, Walsh doubled moving Payton to third. That would be the end of Beck's outing as Michael Boyden entered the game in relief. Cohl Walla kept the momentum going, singling off a bunt and pushing Payton across. Weiss sent an RBI single into right, bringing Walsh home. Walla advanced safely to third on the hit and Weiss reached second on the throw. Jacob Felts then hit a single up the middle to score Walla and Weiss, capping off the offensive burst.
The scoring continued for Texas in the home half of the seventh. Tim Maitland was hit by a Creighton Hoke pitch in the first at-bat of the inning. Brandon Loy reached first and advanced the runner on a bunt single and Payton recorded an infield single to load the bases. After retiring Walsh and Walla, Hoke walked Weiss, Tant Shepherd and Felts in three straight plate appearances, allowing Maitland, Loy and Payton to record the final three runs for the Longhorns.
Weiss went 3-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and a run scored to lead the Longhorns. Felts notched three ribbies of his own, going 1-for-2 with a walk. Walsh batted 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Payton also scored two runs for Texas.
Tomo Delp recorded two hits to lead the Terrapins.
Texas and Maryland continue their season-opening series with a doubleheader Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The first game is scheduled for 12 p.m. and the second game will follow 30 minutes after the completion of the first.

On his expectations today: I was not expecting a complete game shutout. I have almost no expectations, and still, they are exceeded. I am surprised. [Taylor Jungmann] had 91 pitches going into that last inning, and 92 to 100, is what he has been pitching, so it worked out. I thought he did a masterful job changing the way he wanted to pitch in the first two innings, to pitching the way he had to pitch to change the rhythm, which was pretty awesome. You can see what he has added. He has added a changeup that is affecting the left-field hitters and a breaking ball that is more effective on the right hitters. He throws a fastball that is fast.
On what he wants to see in the first game: I think going in, I felt good about the team's attitude. I feel good about the team's makeup, I think they are one and working towards being the best possible team they can be. I had a lot of confidence in them. I am glad to see that they had a lot of confidence. I talk a lot that sometimes there are a lot of prospects on the field, and sometimes there are ballplayers on the field. It doesn't matter what age you are if you are a ballplayer, and I think you saw that with the three freshman. They played ball. It was instinctive, and they weren't affected by any of the things that were around them, and that was one of the most exciting things for me to see. The theory that I hold dear to, is that this is a game of opportunity. And if you are a ballplayer, you take advantage of that opportunity, and today that happened. Just because I think that way, doesn't mean it happens very much.

On him potentially being the everyday third baseman: I'd love to. It is a great experience to be out there as a new guy, but it is also a lot of pressure. So, I will have to live up to it.

On his first game playing catcher: It is definitely hard to fill [Cameron Rupp's] really big shoes. I am going to step in and do whatever I can, try to be consistent, and do whatever job I need to do to help the team win.

On the freshmen's play: We have a really good freshman class. They work hard and are good guys. They came out here and had fun. They showed they can do what we do every day.

On throwing a complete game shutout: I was joking with Cole [Green] the other day about going the distance. But I've been working on that all fall up until this game - longevity and my stamina. So, it was good to get the complete game out there.
