AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 6 Texas Longhorns fell behind early and were unable to dig out of the hole in a 9-2 loss to the No. 9 Stanford Cardinal on Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Taylor Gaffney was the first Stanford runner on base after he was walked by UT starter Cole Green. Stephen Piscotty followed with an RBI double to help Stanford grab an early 1-0 lead. Stanford (6-4) added to the lead in the second inning. Jake Stewart doubled into left center to send home Zach Jones, extending the lead to 3-0. Gaffney threatened to add to the score but Payton made a very athletic diving catch in rightfield to end the top of the second.
The Cardinal inflated the cushion to 6-0 in the fifth. Piscotty doubled in the top of the fifth to get his second RBI, bringing home Gaffney to give Stanford a 4-0 lead. Milner walked Diekroeger giving Ben Clowe two runners on base, when Clowe drove a ball into centerfield that came off the glove of Cohl Walla. Piscotty scored off the error, extending the Stanford lead to 5-0. Lonnie Kauppila hit a single to bring Diekroeger home making it 6-0.
Stanford added one run in the seventh when Diekroeger hit a leadoff single, moved to second on a balk, stole third base and scored on a groundout by Brian Ragira.
The Cardinal lead ballooned to 9-0 with a pair of runs in the eighth. Clowe hit an RBI single and scored on an infield single by Ragira.
Texas (6-4) broke the scoring seal in the bottom of the eighth when Cohl Walla and Jonathan Walsh hit back-to-back doubles.
The Longhrons added a run in the ninth with a leadoff single by Jacob Felts, a single by Christian Summers and an RBI groundout by Payton.
Walla and Walsh each had two hits for the Longhorns. Stewart, Piscotty, Diekroeger and Kauppila had two hits apiece for Stanford. Piscotty, Clowe and Ragira each recorded two RBI.
Dean McArdle (2-0) earned the win for Texas. He allowed just one run on seven hits and three walks while striking out three over 7.2 innings.
Green (0-2) was saddled with the loss. He allowed three runs, one earned, on three hits and one walk with no strikeouts over 2.0 innings.
In the bottom of the eighth Jonathan Walsh hit an RBI ground rule double to right field to bring home Cohl Walla. Dean McArdle was then relieved by Danny Sandbrick. Through seven and two-thirds innings McArdle (2-0) allowed seven hits, one earned run, and struck-out 3 Texas batters.
The Longhorns and Cardinal wrap up the three-game series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
TEXAS QUOTES
Head Coach Augie Garrido
On the team's performance: We lost the momentum in the first inning. Stanford came up on offense and got their game going. That is their game plan and they're good at it. Some things really went in their direction and they threw us off balance. We didn't really protect ourselves and come right back offensively. That's what you have to do. You have to retaliate when things get going for the other team. It is always a fight for the momentum.
Senior pitcher Cole Green
On his performance: I thought my performance was poor. I didn't do anything that I normally do right and it got to me. Stanford is a good team and they came out here and beat us. All we can really do is respond the best we can and play better than we have and learn a lesson from it. I think I learned something today and it is a tough game and we just need to overcome. It is a game of opportunities and there will be more opportunities so as long as I go out there and do better than I did this time then I'll be satisfied.
Junior shortstop Brandon Loy
On the loss: It's baseball. We have to find a way to bounce back from it. It was just one of those days when nothing really goes right for you. Stanford took the momentum early and it is tough to fight back from. We have to find a way when those things happen to fight back and get the momentum and get things to go our way. We're going to come back out tomorrow and work hard.
