No. 11 Men's Golf sits in second place through opening two rounds of Big 12 Championship

HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Texas sophomore Julio Vegas paced a formidable Longhorns contingent with a 1-over par effort through the opening two rounds of the 2011 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship Monday at Prairie Dunes Country Club (par 70, 6,759 yards).
Texas opened the first of Monday's two rounds with a 7-over 287 before finishing with an 11-over 291 in the afternoon round. With 18-hole rounds remaining on Tuesday and Wednesday, Texas sits in second place halfway through the event at 18-over par. Top-ranked Oklahoma State holds a three-shot lead over the Longhorns at 15-over par, while Oklahoma sits one shot back of Texas at 19-over par. Texas A&M holds fourth place at 22-over par. Individually, Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffmann and Kevin Tway are tied atop the leaderboard at 1-under par. UT's Vegas sits just two shots off of the lead with 36 holes remaining.
Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) opened round one at No. 10 and sank birdies at the 12th and 15th holes before making the turn with a 36. Vegas came home with a 34 on the front nine behind birdies at the fourth and seventh holes to finish with his even-par 70 for the round. Vegas opened the afternoon round at the first tee and carded birdies at the fifth and seventh holes en route to a 35 on the first nine. Vegas added birdies at the 14th and 17th holes and finished with a 1-over 71 in round two. Vegas sits in fourth place at 1-over par heading into Tuesday's second round.
Texas junior Dylan Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa), the Big 12 Conference Player of the Year last season, opened with a 4-over 74 in the morning round before shaving a couple of strokes in the afternoon round and finishing with a 2-over 72. Frittelli scattered birdies at the 12th, 14th and 17th holes in round one and added four birdies in round two at Nos. 2, 4, 9 and 14. Frittelli is tied for 11th place at 6-over par heading into Tuesday's third round.
Starting at No. 10 in round one, senior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) finished the back nine with consecutive birdies at Nos. 17 and 18 and made the turn with a 33. Hudson carded a 39 on the front nine and added another birdie at No. 2 before finishing the round with a 2-over 72. Hudson added birdies at Nos. 5 and 17 in round two, where he carded a 4-over 74. Hudson is tied for 11th place at 6-over par.
Freshman Toni Hakula (Espoo, Finland) carded a 2-over 72 in round one behind a birdie at the second hole. Hakula carded a 4-over 74 in the afternoon's second round and added an additional birdie at No. 1, a par-four at 452 yards. Hakula joins Frittelli and Hudson in a tie for 11th place at 6-over par.
Sophomore Cody Gribble (Dallas, Texas) sank birdies at the 13th and seventh holes on his way to a 3-over 73 in round one. Gribble shot a 4-over 74 in round two and will head into Tuesday's third round tied for 18th place at 7-over par.
Texas, a three-time Big 12 champion looking for its first league title since 2004, will tee off in Tuesday's third round at 8:50 a.m. Central and will be paired with Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. The tournament concludes with the final 18 of 72 holes on Wednesday.
