HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Behind top-15 finishes from freshman Toni Hakula and junior Dylan Frittelli, No. 11 Texas braved a raw, blustery day and cemented a third-place finish Wednesday afternoon at the 2011 Big 12 Championship at Prairie Dunes Country Club (par 70, 6,759 yards).
With temperatures hovering around 50 degrees throughout the day under overcast skies with brisk north winds, Prairie Dunes offered a stiff test of golf that yielded a low final round of 14-over par from tournament champion Oklahoma State, who finished at 19-over par for the tournament.
The Longhorns collectively carded an 18-over 298 on the day and took third place at 40-over par through the 72-hole event. Texas A&M placed second at 32-over par, and Texas Tech took fourth place at 43-over par. Missouri rounded out the top-five at 53-over par. Oklahoma State's Morgan Hoffmann took individual medalist honors at even-par.
Hakula's consistency throughout the three days helped him nail down his second top-10 finish among his last three events, as he carded a 1-over 71 in the final round and tied for seventh place overall at 9-over par. Hakula (Espoo, Finland) scattered seven birdies in the final round and secured his second top-10 finish of the month to go along with his fifth-place showing at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate.
Frittelli (Pretoria, South Africa) finished among the top-15 for a second time at a Big 12 Championship, as he carded a 4-over 74 and tied for 11th place at 10-over par. Senior Bobby Hudson (Memphis, Tenn.) shot an 8-over 78 and placed 19th overall at 14-over par.
Sophomore Cody Gribble (Dallas, Texas) carded a 5-over 75 in the final round and tied for 20th place at 15-over par. Sophomore Julio Vegas (Maturin, Venezuela) shot an 84 in the final round and tied for 26th place at 17-over par.
Texas will compete in one of six NCAA regional championship events from May 19-21 at a site to be announced next week.

POST-TOURNAMENT COMMENTS
Texas head coach John Fields
"We felt like we had an opportunity to win up here this week, but we're going to have to wait until the NCAA regional and the NCAA Championships to show what kind of team we are. The guys played well the first three rounds and also at times today. The scores were higher due to the wind, and I don't think anyone knew what the scores were going to be today. It was relative based on the wind. But, this was kind of a frustrating event. We felt that if we played well that we would have a chance to win.
"I'm really happy for Toni Hakula. He played solid golf today. He had seven birdies, which is incredible production based on the conditions. He has the experience of playing in this kind of weather on these kinds of courses. He helped our team. Julio Vegas had the opportunity to play in the final group at the Big 12 Championship, and this was really his first exposure to that kind of competition. He didn't have the round he wanted today, but the experience will serve him well. His first three rounds here were exceptional, and he put us in a position to do well here."
