AUSTIN, Texas - The No. 7 Texas Longhorns registered a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over the No. 14 Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday in game two of the three-game series at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. With the win, the Longhorns earned their 13th consecutive regular-season series win over the Sooners.
For the second consecutive game, the Longhorns held Oklahoma to just four hits and in each of their last five meetings over the last two years Texas has held the Sooners to four hits or less.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning, the Longhorns began to swing momentum back their way when Erich Weiss blasted a home run over the wall in right centerfield to lead off the frame. It was his third home run of the season and increased his hit streak to 15 games.
The Longhorns claimed their first lead of the game in the third inning. With one out, Brandon Loy singled and Mark Payton followed with a single and moved to second on the throw to third to put a pair in scoring position. A double by Tant Shepherd brought Loy and Payton home to tie the game. A single through the left side by Paul Montalbano batted in Shepherd to cap off the third inning with the Longhorns stealing the lead from their rivals, 4-3.
Oklahoma (30-13, 9-9) started in the bottom of the second when. Tyler Ogle drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on sacrifice bunt by Cameron Seitzer. Ricky Eisenberg singled to the gap in right centerfield to push Ogle across for the game's first run. Chris Ellison followed with a walk and a double steal put a pair of players in scoring position. After Cale Ellis struck out for the second out of the inning, Caleb Bushyhead tripled to the wall in right centerfield driving in a pair and extending the lead to 3-0.
After the rough second inning, Cole Green (4-3) bounced back to earn the win. He yielded three runs on three hits and three walks while striking out six over 6.0 innings. Milner entered in the seventh inning to relieve Green and held the Sooners scoreless over 2.0 innings with just one hit with one strikeout. Corey Knebel earned his 14th save of the season, walking one and hitting one batter, while striking out one in the ninth inning.
Burch Smith (7-3) was saddled with the loss for Oklahoma. He allowed four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out one over 2.1 innings. Jordan John stabilized the game for the Sooners, scattering three hits over 5.2 scoreless innings while striking out three.
Jacob Felts was the lone player in the game to register multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
The Longhorns will look for the three-game sweep on Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
