RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico -- Texas junior Julio Vegas (74-72-69) fired a team-best 3-under-par 69 in the final round of the Puerto Rico Classic onTuesday afternoon to climb 15 places on the individual leaderboard and finish tied for 14th place at 1-under 215. Senior Dylan Frittelli (70-72-72) led the top-ranked Texas Men's Golf squad overall at 2-under 214 to tie for 12th place while the Longhorns (288-292-287=867, +3) finished tied for sixth on the team leaderboard.
Although UT rallied in the final round with its lowest round of the tourney and climbed three spots on the leaderboard, it again battled the front nine of Rio Mar Country Club's River Course. The Longhorns finished the front stretch at 5-over compared to 1-under on the back nine. Playing in a shotgun format, Texas began day three on holes eight, nine, 10 and 11.
Vegas countered two bogeys with five birdies on Rio Mar Country Club's River Course to result in Texas' best individual round of the event. Frittelli balanced three subpars with as many bogeys to finish even for the second day in a row
After two 1-under rounds, sophomore Toni Hakula could not keep the streak going. Hakula bogeyed seven holes and sank three birdies in his third round to finish tied for 23rd place at 1-over 217 (71-71-75).
Freshman Kramer Hickok (75-77-71) and junior Cody Gribble (73-77-78) rounded out the Texas squad at 7-over 223 and 12-over 228, respectively, and tied for 43rd and 58th places.
Alabama claimed a wire-to-wire win at 30-under 834 (276-279-279). Host Purdue finished in third place and 18 strokes back at 22-under 856 (289-279-288) while Clemson surpassed the tournament host on the final day to finish second at 852 (283-286-283).
