AUSTIN, Texas - After consecutive days of rain cancelled games on Friday and Saturday, the sun shined brightly over UFCU Disch-Falk Field but Texas Baseball dropped game one of a Sunday doubleheader against Loyola Marymount, 1-0.
Neither side was able to get its offense going for much of the game, but Scott Harkin sent an RBI double to left-center off Texas reliever Parker French in the top of the ninth to plate Cullen Mahoney for the only run the Lions (5-7) would need.
Mahoney singled to right off Hoby Milner to lead off the inning. After French entered the game for Texas, Alex Guthrie sacrificed Mahoney to second. Mahoney then reached third on a wild pitch, setting up Harkin's RBI double.
The Longhorns dropped to 5-8 on the season with Hoby Milner (1-3) suffering the loss. Aaron Griffin (2-2) pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings for LMU to earn the win.
Texas starter Nathan Thornhill pitched 7.1 scoreless innings, fanning five while allowing five hits and a walk. LMU starter Colin Welmon threw seven scoreless innings of his own, striking out two and giving up just three hits.
French pitched one complete inning, recording one strikeout and giving up a hit and a walk. Erich Weiss went 2-for-4 with a double to lead the Longhorns' at the plate.
