Baseball rallies for a 3-1 victory over Loyola Marymount in second game of doubleheader

AUSTIN, Texas - Ricky Jacquez had a career day and got a little help from his offense as the Texas Longhorns beat Loyola Marymount, 3-1, to earn a doubleheader split on Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Jacquez (1-1) fanned a career-high seven batters over five innings and allowed only two hits and one walk to earn the victory for the Longhorns.
Texas also benefited from Tim Maitland's first triple of the season, which scored two runs to set the deficit.
In the bottom of the third inning, Kevin Lusson blazed a leadoff single up the middle and was sacrificed to second by Jacob Felts. Two batters later, Mark Payton drew a two-out walk to put runners on first and second before Tim Maitland laced his triple into the corner in right field to plate Lusson and Payton.
Loyola Marymount halved the deficit in the top of the sixth. Cullen Mahoney led off the inning for the Lions with a single up the middle off Texas reliever Corey Knebel. After Alex Guthrie struck out, Scott Harkin sent a base hit to right field to put two runners on. Matt Lowenstein then singled to left field and advanced to second on the throw to home plate as Mahoney scored safely. But LMU stranded two runners as a Kyle Raubinger strikeout and a Colton Plaia flyout ended the inning.
Texas got the run back in the bottom half of the frame. Jonathan Walsh walked with two outs and reached third on a Brooks Marlow single to left center. Kevin Lusson hit a sharp bouncer to third that was mishandled by the third baseman and Walsh scored on the error.
Knebel pitched two innings of relief for Texas, allowing LMU's lone run on three hits while striking out three. Brooks Marlow went 2-for-3 from the plate for the Longhorns.
Trevor Megill took the loss for the Lions to drop to 0-4 on the season.
Texas returns to UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday, March 13 to take on the Texas State Bobcats. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Central.
