Carpet Capital Collegiate
No. 2 Men's Golf wins season-opening Carpet Capital Collegiate
09.09.2012 | Men's Golf
ROCKY FACE, Ga. -- The defending NCAA Men's Golf Champions began the 2012-13 season in winning fashion as the No. 2 Texas Longhorns (293-266-292=851, -13) claimed the Carpet Capital Collegiate by a five-stroke margin Sunday afternoon at The Farms Golf Club. Freshman Brandon Stone (69-63-72=204, -12) earned medalist honors in his collegiate debut, while sophomore All-American Jordan Spieth (70-66-70=206, -10) finished tied for second place.
Stone, the No. 30 player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, failed to relinquish his 36-hole lead in Sunday's finale. After four-straight pars, he bogeyed the par-3 fifth hole before balancing his scorecard back to even with a birdie on nine. After the turn, he played 10, 11 and 12 at even-par and went birdie-bogey-bogey on 13, 14 and 15. Stone made back-to-back pars on 16 and 17 and held a one-stroke lead on the individual leaderboard as he approached 18. Needing par to win, Stone birdied the last hole for the second-consecutive day for a two-stroke victory.
Spieth carded Texas' low final-round of 2-under 70. His scorecard included five birdies (one, seven, 10, 15, 18), one bogey (three) and one double (12). Spieth has finished at par or better 24 times in his 40 collegiate rounds (.600).
Sophomore Kramer Hickok (77-67-77=221) finished tied for 26th place, while senior Julio Vegas (77-72-73=222) was one stroke back and tied for 31st. Redshirt junior Johnathan Schnitzer (78-70-79=227) rounded out the Texas squad in a tie for 58th place. Redshirt freshman Will Griffin (81-69-76) tied for 56th place at 10-over 226 while competing as an individual for the Longhorns.
Sunday's win marks the first season-opening victory for the Longhorns since sharing the 2008 Gopher Invitational title with LSU. Texas' 22-under 266 in Saturday's round was the lowest single-round team score in the John Fields era. Additionally, Stone's 54-hole total of 204 was the lowest by a Longhorn since Dylan Frittelli accomplished the same feat at the 2009 Puerto Rico Classic. Stone fired a 9-under 63 in Saturday's second round to match the best single-round score (in relation to par) in Texas history since David Gossett at the 2000 NCAA Championship.
