INDIANAPOLIS - Texas notched five individual All-America finishes and registered an additional All-America relay showing to close out the NCAA Championships Saturday evening at the IUPUI Natatorium.
The Longhorns placed fifth in the team standings (288 points) and gave 35th-year head coach Eddie Reese his 33rd top-five NCAA Championships finish at Texas. Michigan claimed the NCAA team title with 480 points, and California finished as the runner-up with 406.5 points. Arizona took third place with 313.5 points, and USC placed fourth with 289 points, one point ahead of Texas.
Texas senior Michael McBroom led off the evening by taking second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a school record mark of 14 minutes, 32.75 seconds. The swim broke his own school mark of 14:32.86 set at the 2011 NCAA Championships, when he won the event.
McBroom, UT's only NCAA champion in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishes his Texas career with the top-three 1,650 freestyle performances in school history. Michigan's Connor Jaeger, a London Olympics finalist in the 1500m freestyle, won the event in 14:27.18.
Sophomore Kip Darmody became the fourth-fastest Longhorn in the 200 backstroke, as he took sixth in the event Saturday evening in a personal best of 1:41.02. Darmody set a personal best in the preliminary round when he qualified eighth for the finals in 1:41.45.
Senior Austin Surhoff, the second-fastest Longhorn ever in the 200 backstroke behind Aaron Peirsol, placed eighth in the event in 1:41.89. Surhoff qualified sixth in the preliminary round at 1:41.16.
Senior Dax Hill notched his second career national top-five finish in the 100 freestyle, as he took fourth in the event at 42.40. Hill qualified seventh in the preliminary round at 42.70. Hill finishes his Texas career as the fourth-fastest Longhorn in the 100 freestyle.
Redshirt sophomore diver Will Chandler secured his first All-America finish and placed fifth in the platform event with 400.25 points. The Waco native earned honorable mention All-America honors in the platform event as a freshman. Chandler used a medical redshirt last season while battling Crohn's Disease, which resulted in the removal of six feet of his colon.
Texas wrapped the meet by taking sixth place in the 400 freestyle relay, as Clay Youngquist, Hill, John Murray and Surhoff finished in 2:51.50.
POST-MEET COMMENTS
Texas diving coach Matt Scoggin
On Will Chandler becoming an All-American after battling Crohn's Disease
It means the world to see a young man going for his goals and going for his dreams under the most incredible circumstances. A year ago today, he made the decision to have major surgery. He had another tough situation to overcome here. He had a poor showing yesterday and a poor showing the day before on the one-meter. He had the mental toughness to erase that, start all over and get up and go to bat again with the belief that he could still do it. It takes a tough young man to do that, and that's exactly what he did.
On his divers' performance at the NCAA Championships
I'm real proud of both of them. Cory (Bowersox) was one of two freshman divers who became an All-American here. He knows he's just touching the tip of the iceberg in terms of how great he can be. In a few years, he will be really good, and he knows that. It's the same thing with Will. It's neat to see him developing and gaining confidence.

On overcoming Crohn's Disease to become an All-American
It means a whole lot. It tells me that I can make it through anything the rest of my life. This has been a really hard year, but it has definitely been worth the trouble.
On his platform diving performance
I was definitely just soaking it all in. This was my first NCAA Championships final. I was up on the (platform diving) tower, and I wasn't being serious about it. I was looking over at my Mom and smiling at her. I was just trying to be loose and in the moment. I know I can do all of those dives. I just have to do them at the right time.
Texas head coach Eddie Reese
On Michael McBroom's runner-up finish in the 1,650 freestyle
He swam a totally different stroke than he swam when he won the mile at the conference meet and when he broke the NCAA record in the 1,000 (freestyle). He was just trying to go too hard. You just can't do that in this sport, it'll catch up with you. But, he was tough enough to stay in it.
On Kip Darmody's back-to-back personal bests in the 200 backstroke
Kip did a great job. He just had to be aggressive. He did that on the 800 free relay and lived to tell about it., so he knew he could do it today.
On the mark the senior class left on the program
The seniors did a great job, and we're going to miss them. They left us in real good position with their spirit and direction. They did a great job of taking care of people all year.
