AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The No. 4 Texas Men's Golf team carded a final-round 3-under-par 285 in Sunday's final round of the Augusta State Invitational to successfully defend its title and collect its third win of the 2012-13 season. Freshman Brandon Stone (74-68-70) rolled to his fifth top five finish with a 4-under 212 for fourth place, marking the sixth time this season he has been UT's low player.
The Longhorns (296-282-285=863, -1) borrowed a bit of `Sunday Magic' from nearby Augusta National - site of next week's Masters Golf Tournament - to overcome the host Jaguars' 2-stroke lead through 36 holes.
Stone's final-round scorecard at Forest Hills Golf Club began with the first of five birdies on the opening hole before encountering the first of three bogeys at No. 4. With a birdie-bogey tradeoff on Nos. 6 and 7, he made the turn at even par. His third birdie of the day came at No. 11, and he dipped to 2-under with a bogey-birdie-birdie stretch at Nos. 15-17.
Through 54 holes, Stone recorded 13 birdies, nine bogeys and 32 pars.
Sophomore Kramer Hickok (74-70-72) recorded a career-best tie for 13th place at even-par 216, while senior Cody Gribble (74-75-70=219) finished three strokes back to tie for 19th.
Junior Brax McCarthy (76-69-76=221) and junior Toni Hakula (74-77-73=224) rounded out the Texas contingent in ties for 28th and 42nd places, respectively
The Longhorns return to action Saturday, April 13, when they host the Morris Williams Intercollegiate at The University of Texas Golf Club in Austin.
