Abby Smith records first career goal and four saves as the Longhorns close out season-opening weekend on Sunday in Austin.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Soccer rounded out its season-opening weekend with a 1-1 double-overtime tie against South Florida on Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field.
Abby Smith recorded her first career goal off a free kick from 50 yards out in the 64th minute before South Florida's Sarah Miller evened the tally in the 69th minute. That would round out the scoring in a physical, defensive-minded match that saw 26 total fouls.
Junior Sharis Lachappelle had the first opportunity to score for either team in the fifth minute with what would be the only shot on goal of the first half. The teams traded runs with both defenses holding strong and headed into halftime with no score.
The field began to open up in the second half with Texas finding an offensive rhythm. In the 52nd minute, junior defender Brooke Gilbert got her head on the ball off a Sharis Lachappelle corner kick, one of seven second-half corners for the Longhorns, but missed high. UT had two more set piece opportunities that bookended an athletic save by Smith in the 57th minute on a shot from USF's Sharla Passariello, but was not able to find the back of the net until Smith's kick from behind the half line in the 64th minute.
The advantage did not last long with Miller's score five minutes later to even the tally and take the game into extra time.
Texas had a chance to take the game with a header shot by freshman Jasmine Hart in the 98th minute that began with a corner kick from senior Gabby Zarnegar, but Bulls goalie Christiane Endler was able to corral the save.
USF's Olivia Chance took a pair of shots in the 106th and 107th minutes while Lachappelle and Brenda Saucedo each had one of their own in the 109th minute, but neither team was able to convert.
The Longhorns (1-0-1) held an 18-7 advantage in shots and took 14 corner kicks to USF's three. Smith finished the game with four saves while Endler made eight.
UT embarks on its first road trip of the season when the team travels to the Beaver State to take on Oregon State (Aug. 30) and Oregon (Sept. 1). Both matches are scheduled for 2 p.m. Central and will be broadcast by Pac-12 Networks.
