COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The decision by Texas Soccer head coach Angela Kelly to start Jasmine Hart coming out of halftime on Friday night against Air Force paid immediate dividends for the Longhorns as Hart quickly found the back of the net twice to help UT to a 3-1 win over the Falcons.
Following a delay out of the intermission after the field lights went out with two minutes remaining in halftime and the score tied 1-1, Hart provided an energetic offensive spark for Texas. After getting a good look in the 47th minute, a header shot that sailed high of the goal, the freshman proceeded to find the back of the net in the 49th and 55th minutes for her first and second goals in Burnt Orange.
The first of the pair came off an Abby Smith goal kick that found the head of six-foot midfielder Lindsey Meyer just past the half line. Meyer's pass cleared the Falcons' back line where Hart took it and sent a shot from 25 yards out past the reach of Air Force keeper Kelly Stambaugh.
Six minutes later, Ali Schmalz popped the ball over the Falcon defenders to Hart, who launched a right-to-left shot across the box from 20 yards out to the back of the net.
Although Hart's goal in the 55th minute capped off the scoring for Texas on the night, the Longhorns maintained pressure on the Air Force back line and continued to create second-half offensive opportunities, including back-to-back shots in the box from Sydney Shutter and Sharis Lachappelle in the 77th minute.
The Falcons' Maddie Lundberg got Air Force on the board first in the 10th minute, finding a loose ball after a Smith block and sending it to the back of the net. But the Longhorns earned a quick equalizer for the second straight game courtesy of Kelsey Shimmick in the 14th minute. Julie Arnold took the throw-in on the right side, deep in UT's offensive third. Freshman forward Marchelle Davis received the ball in the corner and passed it back to a streaking Shimmick at the top-right corner of the box. Shimmick then took a touch toward the goal and ripped a right-footed shot past Stambaugh into the upper left corner of the net.
Texas outshot Air Force 10-7 in the game. Abby Smith had three saves in goal for UT, which improves to 4-2-1 on the season.
The Longhorns return to the pitch to take on Colorado College on Sunday with first kick slated for 1 p.m. Central.
