Brooks Marlow, Bret Boswell each have three-hit games
Bret Boswell and Brooks Marlow recorded three-hit games for Texas and the Longhorns shut down Lamar in the middle innings, but a seven-run eighth inning propelled the Cardinals to a 10-8 victory Saturday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Originally scheduled to be a 12-inning game, heavy rain and lightning prompted officials to end it with two outs in the bottom of the 11th. The Longhorns had scored a run in the inning and had two runners on base when the game was called.
Lamar got on the board in the first inning with two unearned runs. Tyler Sullivan's base hit with the bases loaded and two outs sent Sam Bumpers and Reed Seeley home. Bumpers also had an RBI double in the second inning.
Marlow tripled and scored on a Mark Payton sacrifice fly in the first, and an RBI single by Collin Shaw in the third cut the Cardinal's advantage to one. In the fourth inning, a bases loaded groundout by Tres Barrera sent C.J Hinojosa home and a wild pitch by Lamar pitcher Garrett Autrey allowed Bret Boswell to score and give Texas a 4-3 lead.
Texas controlled the middle innings, as freshman right-hander Morgan Cooper allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings.
After Marlow drove in Ben Johnson with a single in the seventh, freshman lefty Jon Malmin came on to pitch a scoreless bottom half of the inning for a 5-3 Texas lead heading into the eighth.
The Cardinals' rally in the eighth put Texas in a five-run deficit, as Kevin Santana had two RBIs and Justin Eckols and Seeley each had an RBI and a run in the inning. Jude Vidrine scored on a wild pitch and a base hit by Tyler Sullivan, sending Santana home and completing the scoring for the Cardinals. Four of the seven runs were scored with two outs.
The Longhorns attempted a rally in the tenth inning when Johnson and Marlow each had solo home runs, cutting Lamar's lead to 10-7. Pinch runner Taylor Stell scored in the eleventh on a sacrifice fly by Barrera, who proved to be the last batter of the game as lightning moved into the area.
Will Hibbs was the winning pitcher for Lamar, pitching one inning and allowing two hits and one run. Malmin is credited with the loss after pitching 1 1/3 and allowing six runs, three of them earned, on six hits.
The Longhorns play their second and final fall exhibition on Sunday at 3 p.m. vs. Texas State.
