The Longhorns get goals from Chantale Campbell, Marchelle Davis and Sharis Lachappelle to top the Cyclones and improve to 2-0 in Big 12 Conference play.
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas Soccer team capped off a strong opening weekend of Big 12 play with a 3-1 win over Iowa State on Sunday at Mike A. Myers Stadium.
Chantale Campbell, Marchelle Davis and Sharis Lachappelle all found the back of the net in the second half, spurring the Longhorns (8-3-1, 2-0 Big 12) to their second straight 2-0 start in conference play after they shut out TCU, 2-0, on Friday night.
UT and ISU played a scoreless first half, recording only a combined five shots, before Texas broke the game open early in the second period on a header from Campbell in the 50th minute. Aaron Strawser set the play in motion after receiving a throw-in on the right side deep in the Longhorns' attacking third. Strawser played the ball back to Lindsey Meyer, who sent an arcing cross toward the goal from above the 18-yard box. Campbell got her head on it and put the ball away past a diving Maddie Jobe for her third goal in four games.
The score remained 1-0 until Davis put in her first career goal in Burnt Orange in the 65th minute. Kelsey Shimmick broke free in transition, dribbled down the middle of the field and played a through-ball off the outside of her right foot. Davis received the pass on the right side, beat a pair of defenders and finished the one-on-one against the keeper inside the near post to put the Longhorns up a pair.
Iowa State (6-6-0, 0-2 Big 12) got on the board in the 83rd minute on a goal from Jessica Reyes. Koree Willer dribbled down left side of the field to the end line in ISU's attacking third and slotted it back to Reyes, who finished it inside the six-yard box.
Texas quickly got the goal back courtesy of Lachappelle in the 84th minute. Gabby Zarnegar took Texas' ninth corner of the match and played it short to Lachappelle, who shot a high curving ball to the far post that cleared the outstretched hands of Jobe to bring the game to its final tally.
The Longhorns outshot the Cyclones, 15-10, in the match, putting a season-high 11 of them on goal. Meyer and Campbell led Texas with three shots apiece, while keeper Abby Smith recorded four saves, surrendering only her first goal in 359:44 minutes of play.
Texas was one of two Big 12 teams, along with No. 23 West Virginia, to finish league-opening weekend with two wins. The Longhorns will travel to Morgantown next Friday, Oct. 4, to face the Mountaineers at 6 p.m. Central before heading to Kansas to take on the Jayhawks on Sunday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m.
