Felts' run-scoring single in the 11th lifts Texas over UTPA.
AUSTIN, Texas -- For the second time in the last three games, the No. 15/24 Texas baseball team won in walk-off fashion as Jacob Felts laced a two-out single in the bottom of the 11th to score Alex Silver and give the Longhorns a 2-1 win over UTPA Tuesday night.
Texas (6-3), which also won on a walk-off wild pitch Saturday against Stanford, received key contributions from late-game substitutions to win its 39th straight over the Broncs. Madison Carter pinch ran in the ninth and scored the tying run to send it to extras, while Silver and Felts – who also entered as subs – provided the game-winning play in the 11th.
Felts' base hit to right-center field with two outs scored Silver from third – and marked the second season in a row he provided a walk-off hit for the Longhorns. Texas' last walk-off hit was on a double by Felts against Texas Tech on March 16, 2013.
Nathan Thornhill (3-0), who pitched three innings in relief, was credited with the win, while UTPAs Logan Landon (0-1) suffered the loss.
UTPA led 1-0 for much of the game, riding six shutout innings from lefty Alex Henson, who surrendered just two hits while striking out two and walking two. Kyle Tokunaga and Austin Casas followed Henson with a scoreless inning each, and Texas trailed 1-0 going into the bottom of the ninth.
Kacy Clemens and Andy McGuire both drew walks in the ninth and were pinch run for, and after a wild pitch sent Carter to third, Ben Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to center field to tie it up 1-1.
Texas used eight pitchers in the game, starting with right-hander John Curtiss. The redshirt sophomore, who missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery, made his return to the mound and pitched two scoreless innings. Curtiss allowed a hit and a walk, struck out two and faced just one over the minimum.
UTPA scored its only run in the third inning when Jesus Garcia drove in Michael Baca on a two-out single to center field.
After that, six Texas pitchers combined to keep UTPA off the scoreboard for eight consecutive innings, leaving the door open for the extra innings win.
Brooks Marlow went 2-for-5 at the plate for Texas and provided a game-saving defensive play in the top of the 10th. With two outs and a runner on third, the second baseman ranged deep in the hole to his left, made a sliding stop on a hard hit ball and got up to throw out the runner, ending the inning.
An inning later, Felts provided the heroics to give Texas its sixth win in the last seven games.
The Longhorns are back in action Friday when they open play in the Houston College Classic, taking on Rice at 7 p.m. in Minute Maid Park.
