Three Longhorns named to Academic All-Big 12 Men’s Golf Team

IRVING, Texas -- Three University of Texas Men's Golf student-athletes have earned a spot on the 2014 Academic All-Big 12 Men's Golf Team, the league office announced Wednesday. Senior Toni Hakula and redshirt freshman Beau Hossler were named to the First Team, while sophomore Will Griffin was selected to the Second Team.
An economics major and 2014 The Ben Hogan Award Watch List selection, Hakula picked up his third-straight First Team honor. In 10 events this season, Hakula has registered five top-10 finishes, including a season-best tie for second place at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.
Hossler ranks second among the Longhorns with a 71.97 scoring average on the season. He has amassed three top-10 finishes in 10 starts, with his best finish coming this past weekend at the Western Intercollegiate with a tie for third place.
Griffin has notched four par or better rounds this season, including three season-low rounds of 70. Griffin's season-best finish was a tie for 46th place at The Amer Ari Invitational to begin the spring semester.
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services, the academic all-league squad consisted of 23 first-team members and seven second-team members. First team members honor those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team honorees are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify for the team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
