Longhorns take 4-2 lead to the ninth inning but fall on walk-off double

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The No. 25/28 Texas baseball team entered the ninth inning with a 4-2 lead, but Kansas State rallied for three runs and won on a two-run walk-off double by Austin Fisher Saturday night at Tointon Family Stadium.

The loss evened the series at a game apiece. Texas dropped to 35-16 overall and 12-11 in the Big 12 and will go for a series victory Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

Texas had led since scoring three runs to take a 3-1 advantage in the fourth, but K-State continually threatened by putting its leadoff runner on in each of the last six innings. The Wildcats made it 3-2 in the seventh when Ross Kivett hit a run-scoring double, but the Longhorns answered right back when Tres Barrera blasted a solo home run to lead off the eighth.

In the ninth, three straight singles off closer John Curtiss (1-1) cut the lead to 4-3, and Fisher hit an opposite field double down the left field line that hit the chalk to stay fair and scored two runs for the walk-off victory.

Texas received a quality start from Nathan Thornhill, who went 5 2/3 innings and gave up one unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out three. Thornhill pitched around trouble, stranding a K-State base runner at third in three consecutive innings from the second to the fourth.

Brooks Marlow and C.J Hinojosa paced the offense with two-hit days. Madison Carter gave Texas the lead in the fourth when he chopped a two-run single to left field with the bases loaded, and three batters later Kacy Clemens hit a two-out RBI single to make it 3-1.

K-State (25-29, 5-18 Big 12) had taken a 1-0 lead in the second without recording a hit. Two walks, a wild pitch and a passed ball allowed Blair DeBord to come home. Wildcats reliever Levi MaVorhis (6-7) was credited with the win after pitching two scoreless innings.
