Texas surrenders one-run lead in the eighth inning
OKLAHOMA CITY -- The No. 5 seed Texas baseball team was eliminated from the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship Saturday night as No. 1 seed Oklahoma State rallied from a one-run deficit by scoring three runs in the eighth inning to win 6-4.
The Longhorns had rallied from a 3-1 deficit following a rain delay of nearly two and a half hours to go ahead 5-4 heading to the eighth inning. But Oklahoma State got its 27th come-from-behind win of the season by plating three runs in the eighth and holding off the Longhorns in the ninth.
After Tres Barrera led off the ninth with a single, Texas (38-18) seemed to have caught a break when Oklahoma State center fielder Saulyer Saxon dropped a flyball. But pinch runner Weston Hall was thrown out at third on a relay, giving the Cowboys an out and leaving a runner on first.
Still, C.J Hinojosa followed with a single and a groundout by Collin Shaw put the tying runs in scoring position. Cowboys reliever Mark Robinette then got Kacy Clemens to ground out on a hard-hit ball to second, ending the game.
Earlier, Texas tied the game up at 3-3 with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. With the bases loaded, Mark Payton ripped a single to left-center field, scoring Brooks Marlow and Zane Gurwitz. Oklahoma State prevented further damage by recording two strikeouts, leaving the bases full of Longhorns.
The Longhorns edged ahead, 4-3, on another RBI single from Payton in the sixth inning. Travis Duke pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, and Parker French replaced him to start the seventh, retiring the side in order.
But Oklahoma State struck for three runs an inning later on a bases-loaded, two run single from Tanner Krietemeier and a sacrifice fly RBI from Conor Costello.
With Oklahoma State leading 3-1, rain started to fall with two outs in the top of the fourth inning and the game was officially delayed at 5:33 p.m. Two hours and 29 minutes later it was resumed, though Texas was without the services of starter Morgan Cooper who threw 52 pitches before the delay.
Texas had the chance to take an early lead when it loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning after Marlow tripled and the Longhorns drew two walks. Oklahoma State pitcher Trey Cobb, though, induced a 1-2-3 double play and got another groundout to end the inning without allowing a run.
The Cowboys struck the next half inning. With two outs, Tim Arakawa kept the inning alive with a bunt single and Conor Costello followed with a two-run homer to left field on a full count to make it 2-0.
In the third, Texas got on the board when Hinojosa led off with a base hit to left field and later scored on a two-out infield single by Gurwitz. Oklahoma State took back a two-run lead the next half inning when Bryan Case led off with a solo shot to left field.
Texas now awaits its NCAA Tournament fate. Sixteen regional hosts will be announced Sunday at 8 p.m. CT and the full field will be unveiled Wednesday at 11 a.m. on ESPNU.
