Junior forward Jasmine Hart scored her second goal of the season to lead the Longhorns
AUSTIN, Texas – On a soggy and humid Friday night at Mike A. Myers Stadium, Texas (7-4-4, 4-2-1 Big 12 Conference) took a lead early in the second half on a goal from junior forward Jasmine Hart but watched as Oklahoma (9-6-2, 2-2-2 Big 12) rallied for a pair of scores to secure a 2-1 victory.
The defeat ended both the Burnt Orange & White's three-match winning streak and their season-best five-match unbeaten streak.
For Hart the score marked her second of the season and second over UT's last two matches following her "golden goal" that beat No. 17 Texas Tech last Friday night. Freshman forward Alexa Adams was credited with her second assist of the campaign on Hart's tally and has now scored a point in four straight matches (and has 10 total points over Texas' last four contests).
"Credit to Oklahoma," Texas head coach Angela Kelly said. "I thought we created opportunities. Mikayla [Flores] was in with four minutes left and was 1-v-1 with the goalkeeper. Jasmine [Hart] had a breakaway. We need to go ahead and take advantage of those opportunities, especially in conference play, because there's not going to be an opponent who is just going to go away. We needed to clean the ball up and just play better. We didn't play great in the attacking half, so we just need better performances out of our personalities."
Texas managed the first scoring chance of the evening off a great cross from the right end line by Adams. Her feed to the far post landed at the feet of a pair of Sooner defenders and UT senior forward Kelsey Shimmick. With the group battling fiercely for the ball, Shimmick managed to deflect a shot wide left of frame at 3:12.
Oklahoma's offense threatened early on with a couple of solid through balls, but a pair of offside calls neutralized any chance to get off a shot.
The Sooners were at it again at 11:29 as forward Liz Keester moved up the pitch in space and fired a shot from outside the top of the 18 that was tipped up and over the crossbar by senior goalkeeper Abby Smith.
Adams tried her luck for the Longhorns in the 14th minute, turning quickly outside the top of the 18 and launching a drive that traveled over the woodwork.
Texas came close to breaking in front at 29:13 as a cross by junior midfielder Julia Dyche from near the right sideline dropped inside the right edge of the 18. Lying in wait was senior forward Chantale Campbell, but the London, Ontario, native's quick volleyed attempt traveled right into the arms of OU goalkeeper Kassidie Stade for a save.
With approximately eight minutes left in the opening half, the Longhorns earned another corner kick. Campbell delivered a ball into the middle that located 6-0 senior midfielder Lindsey Meyer. The Coppell, Texas, native got a lot of steam on her header, but it scraped just past the outside of the left post.
Hart tried her luck from about 45 yards out with 5:04 left on the first half clock and just missed as her searching try ricocheted off the upper right corner of the woodwork before bouncing away for a goal kick.
It took only 3:36 out of the halftime break for the Longhorns to break in front as a 23-yard blast from Hart, off an Adams assist, hit the underside of the bar before bouncing over the line to make it 1-0.
Oklahoma had a chance to answer right back just 2:26 later as Keester found herself in space inside the 18 with the ball played to her feet. She attempted to fire a quick shot, but slipped as her attempt rolled harmlessly wide right.
Adams just missed making it a two-goal Texas advantage during the 58th minute as the Lancaster, Calif., product's left-footed bending try from 18 yards drifted just past the top left corner.
The Sooners located the equalizer they had been searching for with 29:59 left as a pass up the right wing found Jordyn Knox-Webster. Despite being marked, the defender managed to finish into the left side netting from nine yards out.
With about 17 minutes remaining in regulation a long pass over the top dropped to Hart in the clear. While on a full run towards the top of the 18, the Haltom City, Texas, native tried to control it, but her first touch let her down as the ball rolled in harmlessly to Stade in goal.
Missed opportunities loomed large with 12:15 left as a cross from the left wing by OU forward Devin Barrett was finished on a running header by Caren Nelson to grant OU a 2-1 lead.
Just 40 seconds later, the Longhorns had a chance to score off a corner as a feed inside the 18 landed at the feet of Dyche. Unfortunately, the Southlake, Texas, native's quick shot traveled over the crossbar and out of play.
Texas came close to the equalizer in the 84th minute as a through ball played ahead by Campbell located redshirt freshman forward Mikayla Flores. The La Verne, Calif., product battled her marker to control it, moved to the middle of the 18 and while falling down, forced a Stade save by driving a shot from nine yards out right into the diving keeper's arms.
Off a UT corner with 1:39 remaining, Meyer again out-leapt the crowd out front to head a ball, but her shot drifted left of frame.
The Longhorns had one final chance to tie things up with seven seconds left in the match. The ball was played back and charging into the play from her keeper position was Smith. With three career goals, the Plano, Texas, product blasted away, but her shot ventured wide right as OU managed the 2-1 victory.
