Base Knocks:
- Texas has made a habit of participating in the prestigious Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic (formerly the Palm Springs & Cathedral City Classic) in Cathedral City, Calif. The Longhorns will be making their 10th all-time appearance in the event this weekend, boasting an impressive 32-14 overall record. Texas is 10-8 against ranked teams and has never before faced more than three ranked teams in a single visit as it will this year in battling four rated squads. UT made previous visits in 2005 (3-2), 2006 (5-0), 2007 (4-1), 2008 (3-2), 2009 (4-1), 2010 (3-2), 2011 (4-2), 2012 (4-1) and 2014 (2-3).
- Numerous Longhorns are on active streaks heading into this weekend's Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. The most impressive such skeins belong to sophomore shortstop Devon Tunning who enters play having reached base safely in all 10 of Texas' games this season (longest such streak of her brief career) as well as on a five-game hitting streak. Junior first baseman Holly Kern has reached base safely in eight consecutive contests, while senior third baseman Stephanie Ceo has reached successfully in seven straight.
- Sophomore pitcher Tiarra Davis rebounded from a tough opening weekend in Tempe, Ariz., to lead the Longhorns from the circle during the Texas Classic (Feb. 13-15). The Henderson, Texas, product was a perfect 3-0 during the event with a miniscule 0.43 ERA, two complete games, one solo shutout and 15 strikeouts over 16.2 innings of work, while batting .300 at the dish with a RBI. The 12-0 (5 inn.) triumph over IPFW on Feb. 13, served as Davis' 20th career triumph.
- The 2015 Longhorns are making a habit out of getting the leadoff batter on base to start an inning. Through the opening 10 games of the season, Texas lead-off hitters in any inning are reaching at a 46.7 success rate (28-for-60). The most successful practitioners thus far include true lead-off batter and sophomore shortstop Devon Tunning (9-for-16, .563 as a leadoff), senior right fielder Marlee Gabaldon (5-for-9, .556) and pitcher Tiarra Davis (5-for-7, .714).
- Texas has made the "Big Inning" a part of its repetoire right from the start of the 2015 campaign. So far in the first 10 games, the Longhorns have plated at least three runs in an inning 12 TIMES. In fact, UT has posted at least one three-run frame in SEVEN OF ITS 10 TOTAL GAMES. To this point, the largest single inning Texas has registered was a 13-run outburst in the fifth during the 15-0 (5 inn.) rout of UCSB (February 6). Overall eight of the 12 occurrences have come in the opening three innings proving that Texas wastes no time jumping on the opposition.
- Texas' offense is already making a habit out of taking numerous trips through the nine-batter line-up. So far in 2015, the Longhorns have sent at least nine hitters to the plate EIGHT TIMES overall and at least once in SIX OF ITS 10 GAMES. UT sent a season-best 18 hitters to the dish in the fifth inning of the 15-0 (5 inn.) rout of UCSB (February 6) and batted around on three separate occasions during the 11-4 victory over Colorado State (February 15).
