No. 8 Baseball falls to San Diego 3-1 in game one of doubleheader

Collin Shaw hit his NCAA leading 10th double in the loss
AUSTIN, Texas — No. 8 Texas Baseball (8-3) dropped the first game of a doubleheader 3-1 to the San Diego Toreros (3-6) Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Texas offense was stifled for six innings by San Diego starter David Hill (1-2), who allowed just one run on one hit and four walks, while striking out six Longhorn hitters. Gary Cornish picked up his first save of the year by retiring both batters he faced in the final frame.
Parker French (1-2) took the loss for the Horns after allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He was relieved by Kirby Bellow who tossed 2 2/3 scoreless frames to keep the game within reach.
Collin Shaw had Texas' only hit, a double in the first inning, which gave him a NCAA leading 10 doubles on the year. Shaw also scored UT's only run.
Shaw's one-out double into the left-centerfield gap followed by a pass ball, allowed C.J Hinojosa to lift a sac fly to left field, giving Texas an early 1-0 lead.
San Diego came back with two runs in the second. The leadoff man, Jesse Jenner, reached second on a fielding error by Bret Boswell and came home on a single by Hunter Mercado-Hood following a sacrifice bunt. Riley Adams then doubled down the left field line, scoring Mercado-Hood to give the Toreros the lead. French then forced a ground out and a line out to escape any further damage.
The Toreros added another run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 3-1. A swinging bunt, hit by pitch and hard single loaded the bases, and a sacrifice fly from Colten Waltner brought home the third San Diego run, and also chased French from the game. Left-hander Kirby Bellow entered with runners on the corners and one out, but was able to escape the jam with a caught stealing on an attempted squeeze and a strikeout.
The two squads will return to action at 2:05 p.m. to complete today's doubleheader with lefty Josh Sawyer (1-1) on the mound for Texas.
