The Longhorns were shut out 3-0 by Cowboys starter Thomas Hatch.
AUSTIN, Texas—A complete game shutout by Oklahoma State starter Thomas Hatch sent the Longhorns to a 3-0 loss in game one of Saturday's doubleheader. Texas (20-22, 9-7 Big 12) falls to fourth in the Big 12 Conference with the loss to the Cowboys (26-15, 10-6 Big 12).
The ballgame proved to be a pitching duel as Texas righthander Morgan Cooper matched Hatch for most of the afternoon. Cooper turned in six innings of work, allowing just two and one unearned run while walking three and striking out a career-high-tying eight batters.
Cooper's only blemish of the day came in the top of the fifth. After issuing a leadoff walk, Cooper could not field a a sacrifice bunt to put two aboard with no outs. Another sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third before the Cowboys plated their first run on an RBI groundout to make it 1-0.
The teams exchanged zeroes again until the ninth inning. Three hits and Longhorn error aided Oklahoma State, who put up a two-spot in the final frame to push its lead to 3-0.
The Longhorns threatened in the ninth. Travis Jones opened the inning with a base hit. The Longhorns designated hitter accounted for three of the five Texas hits on the afternoon. Kacy Clemens walked in the inning to give the Longhorns runners on the corners with two outs, but the Texas couldn't scratch a run across.
Game two is set to begin at 6:05 p.m. with Big 12 wins leader Ty Culbreth on the hill for Texas.
