Sophomores Alexa Adams and Katie Glenn score to lead the Longhorns past the RedHawks
OXFORD, Ohio – On a beautiful, 75-degree Sunday afternoon at the Miami University Soccer Stadium, goals from sophomore forward Alexa Adams and sophomore midfielder Katie Glenn powered Texas soccer (4-3-0) to a 2-0 road victory over Miami (OH) (3-4-0).
Adams' goal just 4:52 in marked her team-leading fifth of the season as the Lancaster, Calif., native has now scored in five of Texas' seven total matches in 2016. Glenn tallied her second score of the campaign, by tickling the twine at the 73:10 mark, off the second career assist from freshman defender Atu Mshana.
The Longhorns out-shot Miami (OH) by a total of 13-6, including 8-1 in shots on goal, and managed a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The RedHawks controlled things in the very early going, managing three consecutive blocked shots over a 12-second stretch of the third minute.
Texas would grab an early lead against the run of play, however, as sophomore midfielder Kayra Dollas started the scoring effort with a long feed up the left wing. With Adams pressuring hard up top, Miami (OH) keeper Vic Maniaci quickly raced off her line, but made a mistake as the ball ricocheted off her on a sliding catch attempt. Adams raced past her and scored from a tough angle near the left end line to make it 1-0 just 4:52 into the contest.
The Longhorns continued to pressure strongly over the next 10-plus minutes with solid build-up work resulting in shots from junior forward Olivia Brook, that ventured wide at 11:14, and freshman forward Cyera Hintzen, that forced a Maniaci save at 13:44.
Forward Kat Zalar registered the first RedHawk shot over a 21-minute-plus stretch of match time in the 24th minute as her ambitious effort from deep out on the left side traveled high of frame.
Following a prolonged midfield battle, UT senior forward Jasmine Hart forced Maniaci into more work during the 35th minute. The Haltom City, Texas, native's lengthy drive from 35 yards out forced the keeper to tip the ball up-and-over the crossbar.
With the Longhorns defense holding the RedHawks without a single shot over the final 21:02, Texas managed the final two scoring chances of the first half.
First, Hintzen fired a shot that ventured just high of frame from 25 yards out at the 40:10 mark. Then, during the 44th minute, freshman forward Tecora Turner tried her luck from 19 yards out on the right side but struck it right to the keeper.
Out of the locker room, it was the Horns that put together the first chance as Adams did strong work on the left wing to earn a 53rd minute corner. Off a delivery to the back of the 18 by senior midfielder Julia Dyche, Dollas slightly popped up a header that was caught on the fly by Maniaci.
With Miami (OH) putting together solid stretches of possession, the Horns nearly doubled their lead against the run of play at 59:21. Off a throw in from the left side, Adams found Hart, who turned against her marker and crossed a ball into the middle. In space just seven yards out was Brook, but her flicked header traveled right into Maniaci's waiting arms.
Texas thought it had scored the match's second goal during the 62nd minute as a Dyche free kick from the right wing to the back post was finished from seven yards out by Hart. Unfortunately, the official on the far side of play had his flag up signaling offside.
Finally in the 74th minute, the Longhorns found the twine again, as Mshana corralled a ball on the left side and started the decisive action with a pass into space just outside the top of the 18. Glenn corralled the feed, turned quickly to her left and launched a shot from 19 yards that beat a leaping Maniaci to improve the UT advantage to 2-0.
The RedHawks registered their only shot on goal of the contest at 78:55 as Zalar got around the corner against her marker and fired from 10 yards out. Her effort traveled right to Brown guarding the right post, however, as Miami (OH) missed its best chance to get back in the match.
During the 82nd minute, Miami (OH) managed to earn one final corner, but couldn't get off a shot as the Longhorns eventually ran out the rest of the clock on a two-goal victory.
