Junior midfielder Katie Glenn granted the Longhorns a 72nd minute lead on her fifth goal of 2017
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – On Wednesday afternoon in Big 12 Championship quarterfinal action at the Swope Soccer Village, junior midfielder Katie Glenn's 72nd minute goal wasn't quite enough for No. 14 Texas soccer (13-3-2) as Baylor (11-5-2) rallied late to eliminate the Longhorns from the league's showcase event, 2-1 (OT).
With UT clinging to a 1-0 lead during the 88th minute, BU's Lauren Piercy managed to score the tying goal from six yards out. Midfielder Julie James then located the "golden goal" match-winner for the Lady Bears at the 98:03 mark by sneaking an eight-yard shot inside the left post.
For the Burnt Orange & White, Glenn's goal was her fifth of the season and came off the third assist of the campaign from freshman midfielder Haley Berg. Between the pipes, sophomore goalkeeper Nicole Curry was required to make seven saves.
By heading to overtime for the ninth time during the 2017 campaign, Texas broke the single-season school record of eight OT's previously held by the 2004 Longhorns. UT is now 5-2-2 in extra time this season, having suffered back-to-back OT setbacks to No. 22 Oklahoma State and Baylor.
The two teams tied at 17-17 on shots, the Lady Bears managed a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal and the Burnt Orange & White held a 4-3 lead on corners.
It was Baylor with the first good scoring chance of the match at 1:58 as midfielder Ally Henderson received a ball in space near the top of the 18 but drove her shot wide right.
During the sixth minute, sophomore forward Cyera Hintzen did solid work for the Longhorns up the left wing, eventually crossing a ball into the middle. Glenn raced in near the left post, but her volleyed attempt at frame ventured wide left.
The Burnt Orange & White had a great opportunity during the 14th minute as Hintzen took possession out on the left wing and crossed a ball towards the back post. Waiting there was junior midfielder Amber Stearns, but she couldn't settle the pass cleanly in a crowd. The ball eventually ricocheted off her and right to Baylor goalkeeper Jennifer Wandt who quickly covered.
Lady Bear forward Raegan Padgett located some space inside the 18 and had a great look at goal at 19:03, but her left-footed effort rolled just wide right before striking the side netting.
During the 29th minute, Texas earned its second corner of the match and Glenn delivered a low ball in towards the left post. Racing in was redshirt freshman Cydney Billups, and her running header in a crowd popped up to her right and glanced off the cross bar before being cleared away.
Back at the other end, Baylor midfielder Aline De Lima tried her luck on a shot from 30 yards out and had it travel just over the cross bar.
Billups raced quickly up the right wing with the ball and crossed a pass towards the right post. Adams raced into the play and tried a quick volley at 33:23 that was blocked from seven yards out.
The best chance for either team over the opening half came at 37:03 as a Texas turnover near midfield started a Baylor breakout. A through ball hit Piercy in stride behind the backline, but her 12-yard shot was smothered by Curry.
Strong pressure by the Lady Bears over the last three minutes of the half forced Curry into more action as the net minder managed to get her gloves on dangerous shots from Piercy (42:18) and midfielder Kennedy Brown (43:26).
Out of the halftime break, Baylor continued where it left off as Padgett forced a save from the right side at 46:15.
Junior midfielder Kayra Dollas received a feed in some space 30-plus yards out from goal at 49:00, turned quickly and decided to try her luck from distance with her shot forcing a Wandt grab.
Texas' offense put together its best sustained run of pressure to that point in the match over the next few minutes as Hintzen bounced a shot in on frame at 54:39 and Dollas had an attempt blocked from 20-plus at 55:46.
UT's assault continued nearly unabated as Hintzen fired just wide right from nine yards out during the 62nd minute. Redshirt sophomore forward Mikayla Flores followed at 62:35 by launching an effort into Wandt's arms from 15 yards away on the right side.
The Lady Bears missed another huge chance during the 71st minute as a ball ended up at the feet of Ariel Leach in space inside the 18. She attempted a quick left-footed shot, but it missed the top left corner of the net by mere inches.
The scoreless deadlock was finally broken by the Longhorns at 71:26. Berg picked up a turnover about 40 yards out from Baylor's goal, turned and took a dribble upfield. The Celina, Texas, delivered a perfectly-weighted through ball between defenders to Glenn racing up the middle of the 18. Facing Wandt 1-v-1, the Round Rock, Texas, native didn't miss, scoring her fifth goal of the season into the lower left corner from nine yards out to boost UT to a 1-0 advantage.
Strong Baylor pressure during the 82nd through the 84th minutes resulted in a pair of Lady Bear corners. Both feeds were delivered into the middle, and despite some difficulty, each were finally cleared out of danger by Texas with no BU shots recorded.
With just 2:19 remaining in regulation and the Longhorns desperately trying to hold on to their one-goal lead, BU defender Sarah King picked up a ball past midfield. She launched a pass over the backline that dropped right at Piercy's feet just six yards out near the right post, and she finished easily to the left past Curry to tie the score.
Trying to answer right back just 19 seconds later, Hintzen had the final chance of the half for either team on a running header near the right post, but her shot struck the side netting.
In the first extra session, Texas' offense managed strong pressure in the 93rd minute as quality shots from Berg, Hintzen and freshman midfielder Emily Strouphauer were all blocked by the Baylor defense.
Unfortunately for the Longhorns, the end would come via "golden goal" at 98:03 as midfielder Julie James dribbed up the left wing and beat Curry inside the left post from eight yards to complete a 2-1 Baylor triumph.
