AUSTIN, Texas—For the second straight game, No. 21 Texas Baseball (6-3) rode a nine-run offensive output to a win at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns came back from down 3-0 to defeat visiting Lamar (6-3) by a 9-5 final on Tuesday night.
The Longhorns got behind early when Lamar freshman Corey Coker hit a three-run homer off starter Connor Mayes in the second frame. Texas answered back, however, cutting the lead to one thanks to a bases-loaded RBI single from catcher Michael McCann and a sacrifice fly from freshman David Hamilton.
Down 3-2 in the third, Kody Clemens opened the inning with a leadoff single. With two outs, second baseman Bret Boswell hit a mammoth home run off the UFCU Disch-Falk Field light tower in right field to put the Longhorns on top, 4-3.
From there, the Longhorns did not look back.
Mayes exited with two down in the fourth in favor of left-hander Nick Kennedy (1-0), who faced the minimum through 1.1 innings of work to earn his first win of the season.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Longhorns tacked on some insurance runs.
After Ryan Reynolds worked a one-out walk, Kacy Clemens smacked his second double of the ballgame to put runners on second and third. After a balk scored Reynolds and moved Clemens to third, Boswell was hit with a pitch to put runners on the corners. After a pitching change, Travis Jones singled to right to plate Clemens and push the score to 6-3. Jones proceeded to swipe second and with no one covering, Boswell scored to make it 7-3 in favor of Texas.
The Cardinals managed to get two back in the seventh thanks to a two-run long ball of Beau O'Hara, but the Longhorns and Jones once again responded. With Boswell on first after walking, Jones tripled to right-center push the lead to 8-5.
Texas added one more in the ninth when, after David Hamilton walked and stole second with two outs, Kody Clemens added an RBI single to make it 9-5.
Beau Ridgeway closed out the game with two innings of scoreless baseball for the first save of his career.
The Longhorns head to Palo Alto, Calif., this weekend for a four-game set against No. 19 Stanford beginning Thursday, March 2.
