Right-handed pitcher Nolan Kingham was dominant in nine innings against the Wildcats.
AUSTIN, Texas—Sophomore right-hander Nolan Kingham went the distance on Friday night, throwing a complete game shutout to lead Texas Baseball (15-10, 1-3 Big 12) to a 2-0 win over Kansas State (15-7, 0-1) at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
From the start, Kingham (3-2) was dominant. The Las Vegas native needed just eight, 10 and six pitches, respectively, to get through the first three frames of the ballgame.
In the third, the Longhorns offense produced what would eventually amount to the game-winning run. Travis Jones opened the inning with a hit by pitch and, with one out, Kacy Clemens doubled to give the Longhorns runners on the corners. After Bret Boswell was intentionally walked to load the bases, catcher Michael McCann booked it down the line to avoid the double play, scoring Jones from third in the process and putting the Longhorns up 1-0.
After Kingham retired the side in order in the fourth, Texas added an insurance run in the home half of the inning. Austin Todd singled to open the inning and David Hamilton walked. Jones then came through for the Longhorns, singling up the middle, plating Todd and giving Texas a 2-0 advantage.
That would be all Kingham needed as the righty shut down the Wildcats offense on just 111 pitches. Kingham allowed just four hits and two walks while fanning five in a career-best nine innings of work.
With the shutout, Kingham lowered his season ERA to an astounding 0.72. It was the first complete game shutout for a Longhorn since Connor Mayes did it on May 23, 2015 vs. Baylor in the Big 12 Championship.
The Longhorns and Wildcats resume the three-game set tomorrow with a 4 p.m. game.
