Freshman RHP Blair Henley tossed a complete game in the loss
PALO ALTO, Calif.—Despite a complete game, eight-inning effort from freshman right-hander Blair Henley, Texas Baseball (7-6) dropped the series finale, 2-1, to Stanford on Saturday evening at Sunken Diamond.
For the first time this series, Stanford got on the board first. After both sides were retired in order in the first, the Cardinal manufactured a run in the second. A pair of singles and walk loaded the bases before a wild pitch allowed Mikey Diekroeger to score from third and give Stanford a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinal added to its lead in the fifth when, with one out, Henley walked and hit a batter to put two on. After a fielder's choice, Quinn Brodey, who won game one of the double header with a 10th-inning homer, singled to left center to score Matt Winaker and make it 2-0 in favor of Stanford.
The Longhorns responded in the sixth, however. Having not recorded a hit through the first five frames, freshman Austin Todd opened the sixth inning with a triple off the wall in left field. Todd came around to score when Stanford committed a throwing error trying to get the ball in and the Longhorns pulled to within one at 2-1.
Despite loading the bases in the eighth and putting a runner on second to lead off the ninth, the Longhorns were unable to score the tying run.
Henley (1-1) went the distance for the Longhorns, notching his first career complete game and the first complete game for Texas pitching this season.
The Longhorns return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday night for a 6:30 p.m. CT game against Richmond.
