Baseball rolls to 9-0 shutout of Richmond

The Longhorns used a five-run second to propel themselves past the Spiders on Tuesday night.
AUSTIN, Texas—On Tuesday night, Texas Baseball (8-6) racked up 13 en route to a 9-0 win over visiting Richmond (3-8) at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns got on the board early against Richmond and did not relent. In the first inning, Zane Gurwitz walked to open the frame and Austin Todd, who reached base safely four times on the night, worked a two-out walk. Junior Bret Boswell and freshman Ryan Reynolds then followed with back-to-back RBI singles.
On top 2-0, it was in the second inning that the Longhorns broke it open. Catcher Michael McCann led things off with a double through the left side and Patrick Mathis followed with a walk. Gurwitz then laid down a bunt single to load the bases before a David Hamilton fielder's choice and a throwing error made it 4-0.
Kacy Clemens followed up Hamilton with a walk before he and the freshman pulled off the double steal to put two in scoring position for Todd. Once again, Todd delivered. The left fielder doubled down the line to plate both Clemens and Hamilton, giving Texas a 6-0 lead. Boswell then came up with his second RBI single of the evening and the Longhorns led 7-0 after two complete.
The Longhorns tacked on one more in the third when, after McCann led off with his first career triple, Travis Jones grounded out to plate him and make it 8-0.
In the seventh, Todd notched his second double of the ballgame to score Tyler Rand and give Texas its 9-0 final.
On the mound, junior right-handed pitcher Connor Mayes (1-1) tossed five shutout innings en route to his first win since May of 2015 in the Big 12 Conference Championship. Parker Joe Robinson threw a pair of scoreless while Tyler Schimpf and Kevin Roliard finished out the game in the eighth and ninth, respectively.
The Longhorns return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field tomorrow night to take on Texas A&M - Corpus Christi at 6:30 p.m.
