The Longhorns rallied in the ninth but came up short.
LAWRENCE, Kansas—Despite a ninth-inning rally, Texas Baseball (19-11, 4-4 Big 12) dropped a 2-1 contest to Kansas on Satruday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark.
The two sides swapped zeroes for the first three frames before Kansas broke through with an unearned run in the fourth off Morgan Cooper (3-2). The Jayhawks added another in the sixth to go up 2-0, taking the two-run advantage into the ninth inning.
Freshman Austin Todd, who finished with two knocks in the ballgame, opened the final frame with a single to spark the Longhorns. With one away, Michael Cantu pinch-hit and laced a double into right to plate Todd and bring the Longhorns to within one.
With two away in the inning and Tyler Rand pinch-running for Cantu at second, Tate Shaw, who ended the previous inning by throwing out a runner at the plate, ripped a single to left. In an attempt to score the tying run, Rand was called out at the plate to end the ballgame and give Kansas the one-run victory.
The Longhorns added seven hits in the game while Todd and Kacy Clemens each reached three times. Clemens has now reached safely in 17 consecutive games for Texas.
Texas and Kansas return to Hoglund Ballpark on Sunday for a 1 p.m. rubber match.
