Baseball drops series finale, 5-4, at Kansas

The Longhorns fell, two games to one, in their first Big 12 road series of the year.
LAWRENCE, Kansas—Texas Baseball dropped the series finale at Kansas by a 5-4 final score on Sunday afternoon at Hoglund Ballpark. The loss moves the Longhorns to 19-12 overall and 4-5 in Big 12 action.
The Longhorns got on the board first in the ballgame thanks to a two-run third inning. With one out, freshman David Hamilton drew his first of two walks on the day. Travis Jones followed with the same before Tate Shaw was plunked to load the bases. Kacy Clemens then worked a full-count walk to force in a run and put Texas up 1-0. Bret Boswell then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Jones and the Longhorns led it 2-0.
In the fourth, Ryan Reynolds launched a 1-0 offering over the right field wall—his second homer of the series—to push Texas' lead to 3-0.
The Jayhawks answered back in the bottom of the fourth off Blair Henley, who, to that point, had retired the first nine he faced in order.
Back-to-back Kansas singles opened the frame before Henley hit the Jayhawks' No. 3 hitter with a pitch to load the bases. KU followed with a pair of RBI groundouts before a two-out single tied it up at 3-3.
Texas then responded in the fifth. Kacy Clemens drew a four-pitch walk to open the inning before stealing his third bag of the season. With one out, catcher Michael McCann singled up the middle to put the Longhorns back on top 4-3. Another KU two-out knock in the home half of the inning re-tied the game and the two sides were knotted up a 4-4 after five.
After trading zeroes in the sixth and seventh, the Jayhawks benefited from a walk, a wild pitch and a two-out double to put themselves ahead 5-4 in the eighth.
That would be all for the ballgame, as the Longhorns were unable to score in the top half of the ninth.
Texas returns home for a Tuesday night matchup against Sam Houston State at UFCU Disch-Falk Field, scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. CT.
