In a spot start, lefthander Nick Kennedy threw six scoreless for the Longhorns.
AUSTIN, Texas—Backed by a strong start from lefthander Nick Kennedy, Texas Baseball cruised to a 7-1 win over New Orleans on Friday night at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The Longhorns (26-15) came one out from securing their second straight shutout but pounded out 10 hits in the victory.
Texas got on the board in the third inning when junior outfielder Travis Jones launched his third homer of the season to the opposite field, scoring Kody Clemens and putting the Longhorns up 2-0.
One inning later, freshman David Hamilton added a two-out single to drive in Michael McCann and the Longhorns pushed their lead to 3-0 over the Privateers (19-19).
Texas tacked on another run in the fifth frame when senior first baseman Kacy Clemens crushed his team-high eighth home run of the season and Texas led it 4-0 after five complete.
Kennedy's day would be done after six scoreless innings of work. The lefty, who had only been informed that he was starting earlier in the day, allowed just four hits and two walks while fanning three to move to 6-0 on the season.
While Kennedy's outing came to an end after six, the Longhorns bats did not rest. In the seventh, Texas loaded the bases with no outs before Kacy Clemens ripped the first pitch he saw up the middle to plate two and make it 6-0. Michael McCann followed three batters later and singled through the right side to drive in Jones and put Texas up 7-0 on the Privateers.
The Privateers scored their lone run in the ninth inning off Parker Joe Robinson, but Chase Shugart would enter with two outs to secure the win for Texas.
The Longhorns and Privateers meet again tomorrow at 4 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Right-handed pitcher Morgan Cooper will take the hill for Texas.
